When to buy a new PC? Now or at Bos release?

I was speaking only on Intel. I haven't had much experience with AMD (aside from setting up a friend's PC) over the past 6 or 7 years. Same with their video cards, briefly looked at them during my most recent build but after reading several user reports of driver issues I decided to stick with nVidia.

Oh ok, I didn't mean to come off rude if that's how I sounded. AMD's driver issues are greatly over blown however. Between my Phenom 965 + Radeon 7850 OC Edition and my brother's A8 APU + Radeon 6670 Dual graphics set up I've never seen any serious driver issues. That's just personal experience however and I've never mixed AMD and Intel parts due to Intel's price points and they don't exactly fit with what I'm doing on my PC so if there are any driver issues there I've never seen them and only rarely heard of them in the past year and a half or so.

I have the 770GTX with 2GB and using 2560x1600 in RoF. Not an issue, only using half the memory. Other games, though, that use tons of textures or very high res textures might need 4GB (which is what the 770 comes in, not the 3GB option like the 580).

Thanks for the info :good:

I think I'll go for a 770 in that case. The 580 GTX just isn't quite enough to have all the bells and whistles in ROF or BOS when in my native resolution. I can't justify getting a 780 which is so much more expensive and offers just 15% more performance at the moment.

Can anyone comment on that?

Does this build make sense? I understand that the graphics card is not the best but I usually tend towards not buying top notch and top pricy products and maybe upgrade later when I really need it.

I think that looks good, you'll probably want to upgrade your video card in the future but it should get you through several months of BoS.

You'll also want to think about cooling, the standard fan/heat sink that comes with that chip is insufficient. I have the Noctua NH-D14 - which is a monster in price and air cooling, but you can find cheaper heatsink/fan combos that are sufficient such as the Hyper-212.

Go with a i5 4670k or4670 if your not going to OC,8GB of ram. Spend the saved money on a better GPU.

Ps Go to Pcper.com for info.

The heatsink is sufficient if your not going to OC.

Yeah, you can go i5 - the i5 vs i7 is only relevant for HyperThreading (which games don't utilize) and the i7 has a larger L2 cache. The i5 is cheaper, so can save about $100. I would stay with a k model though so you have the option to overclock later even if you don't do it right away.

Link didn't show up, but all of those things will work together - the biggest concern is the case. That's when things don't fit right because it isn't wide enough, or deep enough, or etc.

Oh, and the PSU - you'll want to make sure it has the proper connectors for the mobo and vid card. Most do these days, but I'm not sure what brand/model PSU you went with.

I got everything here. I like Linus's reviews too. I don't care what anybody else says. Linus is on the left hand side "Tech Tips" Ubar nerd. Type down a model of vid card and he's probably do a review on it on youtube.

If it isn't I don't know where you are but I imagine the prices are relative.. you can get a decent AMD rig for @$500-$600 talking CPU MOBO and RAM. Toss in another $180-$280 for the GPU and you could be set.

I read all the bad stuff about AMD.. but my rig runs everything I throw at it once I set the graphics for the product. Initially I was getting 20-30 FPS in RoF but since I tweaked things I now get 50-70 and up into 3 digits when I look up.

I've had no real problems with the rig I got Scan to build for me a couple of years back with an AMD 6970 GPU.

The full spec:

MOBO - X58 Asus Sabertooth X58
CPU - Intel i7 950 Quad Core 3.06Ghz (overclocked to 3.80Ghz)
RAM - 12 GB (3x4GB) Corsair DDR3 (1600)
GPU - XFX 6970 2GB
PSU - 1000W Corsair
SSD - 128 GB
HDD - 1 TB SATA 2 (I've added a 233 GB backup since myself)
OS - Win 7 Home Premium 64bit
Case - Antec Three Hundred
Monitor 24" Samsung

The case might prove a little on the tight side if I ever get to adding a second GPU, but I can't see that happening, finance wise.

It runs RoF fine on high settings - I've not really bothered checking FPS etc.

Yes indeed, the X58 chipset was, and is, quite the performer. Rock solid, and those I7 cpu's overclock nicely using the blck.

Still running mine today, overclocked to 4.0 ghz without so much as a hiccup, for the last 3+ years.

It was a tough decision for me to go ahead and upgrade, which I will be doing here in a few weeks ( already getting the parts in), I may have to put this MB on a sort of " hall of fame" shelf here somewhere around the house or garage. Only reason I am really, is building is almost as much a hobby as my flight simming, and I am due...

I play my games curently on an iMac (mid 2011, 27"), but since it has only a very limitied graphics card (512mb ram only!, i can play RoF and CloD though, but not great, obviously...) So I want to buy a new and dedicated machine.

I figure that since BoS is on almost the same engine as RoF, it doesn't matter too much if I buy it now or in 6 months.

Or do you think it is worth to wait untill the release, so the pc is just up to date at the release?

I'm curious about your oppinions since I'm not that much of a technics nerd anymore that I was in the late 90ies ;)

Thaks,

Over the years I noticed that you have to wait 2 or 3 years to able to buy hardware capable of running a new game engine in max settings and high fps. But BoS is another story. I really hope that we can run it with the same hardware we have right now. I am very curious about the early access and see what happens :)

Buy your new computer at least six months after release.

I would've thought that was obvious. Everything you could buy now will be cheaper in six months time.

I still play 'Legend of Zelda' on the Super Nintendo, by the way. It's a really good game. Honest.

Everything you could by in six months time would be cheaper still in another six months...

And imagine another six months after that!

Last word: I would wait. The "next gen" (consoles, sad but true) is at the gates. Nothing that should scare us, since the specs of this new generation have leaked weeks ago, but still: no rush.

wait and see, meanwhile the early access will come and you'll get the opportunity to test BoS on your actual machine, and see what's the performance in a range from terrible to excellent.

After that you can make your considerations and proceed to purchase.

Yep, six months, be sure..

Wait if you can, see how the beta runs, if it runs ok, wait just before release to upgrade, if the beta doesn't run well enough for your standards then upgrade then.

Simples!

Ok I have now my system :)

Saw an offer I couldnt resist, together with a 27" monitor. Its an i7 4770k though (the i5 didnt come with the monitor... So i switched gladly) but I got also 8gigs of ram for free (total 16gigs now) and the gtx 660 with 2gigs ddr5 will be upgraded as soon as it refuses to handle BoS or DCS anymore ;)

I was very close to buld my own system (had the list printed out and went to the shop) but the bundle had almost everything I needed for a very reasonable price so I gave it a shot.

Thank you all for your support youve helped me a lot :)

Cant wait now even more for the Beta to finally come out!!

Cheers
