EAF19_Marsh Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 I remember this topic fondly from the great days of Il-2 but could not see it on this forum. People posted fantastic data on little-known and arguably not successful types that nevertheless had great soul and character. The 'Crap' part came only from their being little known, not necessarily poor performance across the board. It also commemorates the thousands of pilots that daily climbed aboard aircraft several notches down from the 'cutting edge' but nevertheless flew them in to the teeth of enemy fire. Or trained on them (equally as dangerous). As BoM has announced the I-16 (Crap-ish) and MiG-3 (Some Crap Bits) plus an AI-only Ju-52 (Crap Is In The Eye of the Beholder), it seems we might be entering the realm of full Crap rosters. Appreciate that the time required to make these is far greater than that for Il-2, but it is fun nevertheless to suggest some and you never know what might happen if enough momentum is achieved To start, in honour of the new title, I nominate the Polikarpov I-5:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polikarpov_I-5 "Following the German Invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941, the heavy losses of front-line aircraft endured by the VVS together with the disruption of aircraft production resulted in I-5s being removed from training units and returned to combat service as ground-attack aircraft or night bombers until early 1942. Some I-5s were used by the 605th and 606th Fighter Regiments (Istrebitel'nyye Aviatsionyye Polki (IAP)) during the defence of Moscow as night bombers until re-equipping in February 1942.[10] The 2nd Ground Attack Regiment (Shturmovoy Aviatsionyye Polki (ShAP)) was raised in September 1941 in the Crimea from reservists and the Kachin Flying School. By 10 October thirty-two I-5s were on hand, although attrition had reduced them to sixteen serviceable. They were down to a total of a dozen aircraft by 18 October. They served until 1 February 1942 when the regiment was withdrawn for conversion to Ilyushin Il-2s and redesignated as the 766th ShAP.[11] The 11th ShAP was raised by the Air Force of the Black Sea Fleet on 22 September 1941. On 18 October it mustered eighteen serviceable and fifteen unserviceable I-5s, although this was reduced to eleven serviceable and eight unserviceable aircraft by 7 November. It kept the I-5s in service until 1 February 1942 when the regiment was reorganized." 2
Finkeren Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 (edited) Well, my first nomination will be the obvious one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polikarpov_Po-2 I'd like to keep it at planes that actually saw combat, so another candidate might be: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henschel_Hs_123 Edited February 24, 2015 by Finkeren 10
unreasonable Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 (edited) Now you are talking: something I might actually be able to fly! Nice pics. Edited February 24, 2015 by unreasonable
=362nd_FS=Hiromachi Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Hands up for I-153, preferably with unlock with two Shvak cannons. 8
Finkeren Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 One of the more important ones to get might actually be this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukhoi_Su-2 1
EAF19_Marsh Posted February 24, 2015 Author Posted February 24, 2015 (edited) I would buy all of those if they were released tomorrow Maybe an unlock? Edited February 24, 2015 by EAF19_Marsh 1
Blooddawn1942 Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Nice list. I would certainly buy them all!
Siipiorava Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 I'd like to see the Focke Wulf 189 "Uhu" 2
CUJO_1970 Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 None of these really qualify as true crap planes IMO. The crap planes thread was SIMHQ I think?
SvAF/F19_Klunk Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 (edited) Love crap... Longing for chaika..although quite lethal P11 Edited February 24, 2015 by SvAF/F19_Klunk
kestrel79 Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 I'm a crap plane enthusist haha. Right now to get my crap plane fix I have to fly the early Warthunder planes. They have most of them
II./JG77_Manu* Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Hs 129 is waay off topic mate, greatest Schlachtflieger of all times rather belongs into "greatest engineering achievements of all WW2"-thread
Zettman Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 S! Damn the Hs 123 looks so cute! I want to hug it! I also want to fly it! Zettman
BeastyBaiter Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 (edited) The top 3 "crap planes" I'd like to see added (ignoring those already in or planned) are: 1) I-153: Because the glorious Chaika is glorious. Bow before its glory. 2) Hs-129: Why? 75mm cannon mounted on a plane, that's why. 3) Hs-123: I like my biplanes and it was arguably one of the better CAS planes in WW2 despite its freakishly sparse numbers throughout the war. 6./ZG26_5tuka Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 Hs 129 is waay off topic mate, greatest Schlachtflieger of all times rather belongs into "greatest engineering achievements of all WW2"-thread I'd agree with you if it did not have those lame frenchy engines but it's great nonetheless.
79_vRAF_Friendly_flyer Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 1) I-153: Because the glorious Chaika is glorious. Bow before its glory. Ia, ia, ph'nglui mglw'nafh Chaika R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn, fhtagn! 4
Brano Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 One of the more important ones to get might actually be this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukhoi_Su-2 First air ''victory'' of Sasha Pokryshkin
EAF19_Marsh Posted February 24, 2015 Author Posted February 24, 2015 Hs 129 is waay off topic mate, greatest Schlachtflieger of all times rather belongs into "greatest engineering achievements of all WW2"-thread Maybe, but it is not your run-of-the-mill single-engined fighter (and had some issues) so it qualifies I do not know if there is an economic rational for the time spent on these, but an Il-4 would seem to be very welcome (and important) while having some Crap-chic to it. The 110 is planned and the I-153 would be great addition alongside the I-16. P-40 and P-39 have future-theatre potential. The U-2 series would be fantastic. Liaison and recce types would be peachy but probably not easy to justify from a development time perspective.
Elbows Posted February 24, 2015 Posted February 24, 2015 I heart this thread. Particularly with the release of the editor, I would love to see far more non-combatant style aircraft. Scouts, transports, etc. I'd really love to see more of those style planes in the game. If we have DLC plane packs in the future I hope 10-20% of the planes are perhaps the planes from this thread.
ShamrockOneFive Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 You know... as a pair of aircraft might be considered. Both the I-153 and Hs123 would be a neat combination of types to add to each side. Crap Planes yes but also super useful and with surprisingly long front line lives despite their obsolete performance levels. Probably fits the perfect definition of a Crap Plane 2
Feathered_IV Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 I love all of the above suggestions. They are the precise list of the aircraft that I wish to fly the most. If only I was the sort that always went for the latest and shiniest über plane...
IIN8II Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Now that the MiG-3 is coming, I think the Su-2 is my next biggest want.
indiaciki Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 po-2, storch, gloster gladiator etc. yes. give us flyer's planes, please !!!!!!!!!!
CheeseGromit Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Since it's got a mention. If I could only have one plane added to the game ever, I'd be the Hs 129. Ideally with the full suite of weapons covering B-2 and B-3 variants.
EAF19_Marsh Posted February 25, 2015 Author Posted February 25, 2015 Suppose EA for BoM will likely be the test of whether we will get any of these, but I would still suggest that the studio make individual new aircraft available on a separate basis after they are open to EA but before the complete new theatre is ready - good cash and enthusiasm generator. Low priority, but given the bizarre collection of aircraft on the Eastern Front there are some interesting beg / borrow / steal aircraft out there which again would be interesting for potential future theatres (like if someone wanted to make a third party Northern France map):

Crap planes are always the cool factor in WW2 sims, frankly i miss them so bad from original il2. I'd like to have Po2 vs JU52 (flyable), and then I153 vs Hs123 too (as Shamrock said). These birds remind me of the saying: "sure we have technology, but one still uses shovels to dig holes" They really look awesome to me. Anyway we will get the I16 at least. 6./ZG26_5tuka Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 To be fair despite it's age the Hs 123 were very effective ground attack planes serving until 1944. They all were assigned to one Schlachtstaffel flying ground attack missions on the eastern front and their pilots admired their manouvrebility making them very difficult targets for soviet fighters. I'm all for this bird and think it oculd earn 777 some fame if they manage to recreate it accurately. Not only because it was the direct predecessor of my all time favourite aircraft This on the other hand would include having it's authentic engine struttering sounding like machinegun fire for ground troops implemented as well.

Feathered_IV Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Hmm... Storches taking off and ranging across the forests of Velikie Luki, seeking out enemy ground units. On the map the Storch is like a moving radar bubble as it lights up contacts in its immediate vicinity. When the Storch player finds something interesting, he circles the area to keep it highlighted for Henshel 123's that soon begin to converge. If command units are present, the Storch will find itself illuminated in turn after a few minutes to every Russian fighter that is operating. A Storch is worth three times the mission points for its desruction, so every VVS player wants to bring them down. Can the ungainly recon plane avoid flak and fighters long enough to see the target destroyed? 1
Brano Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Yep,Hs126,Fi156,Fw189 - all of them very essential support aircrafts in reccon and artillery spotting.I would love to fly such missions
sallee Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 Interesting. My current stash of 1/48 models includes Hs129, FW189, I-153, MiG-3, Su-2, Po-2...together with Buffalo, Boomerang and Devastator with Skua, Fulmar and Roc on the horizon....I just love a crap plane.
EAF19_Marsh Posted February 25, 2015 Author Posted February 25, 2015 In SEOW the recce element was hugely important, though was usually carried out by a standard bomber. Some way of making it useful for Syndicate-like servers as F_IV suggested would be fantastic. Kickstarter (Crapstarter) ?
Finkeren Posted February 25, 2015 Posted February 25, 2015 I'm normally not at all a fan of fictional what-if scenarios, but there is one thing, I'd like to see in a flight sim: A fictional campaign, where the war between Germany and the USSR has started prematurely in 1936 or 37, without the interference of the Western Powers, but with Poland caught in the middle. Just think about it: Early I-16s, I-15s and I-5s battling it out with He 51s, Hs 123s and Ar 68s, across central and eastern Europe, maybe even the Balkans, with Early very early Stukas, Early He 111s, TB-3s, Po-2s and SBs maybe even a converted Ju 52 forming the bomber force. With planes like Bf 109Bs, later types of I-16s, Su-2 and the first Ju 88 making apperances over the course of the war. That's something I might forget my knowledge of history for
