pilotpierre Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 My specs are in my Sig and I am giving serious thought to upgrading the graphics card as I suspect the 1.5G is not going to be sufficient once user mission/campaigns become more available. I have spent some time checking out the various cards and the more I look onto it the bigger the head ache and confusion. Is upgrading to a better card going to increase performance to a greater degree, and if so, any recomendations on a card that would be compatable to the existing rig?
xedoc Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 More VRAM should prevent CTD if you get it. Though I doubt you will get any fps boost. This game is CPU bound. So to get fps boost you will need to pick up a CPU with the best single-thread performance and overclock potential. GPU model is limited by your PC case not motherboard. Some cases won't allow you to install a card with length >30cm (>15") GTX 760-770 is more than enough for this game.
Dakpilot Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I run a GTX770 2GB and depending on resolution it is just about the minimum if you want to have all the graphics options turned up at 1920x1080, you can get good result with DSR changing resolution to 2x but a 770 is just not quite powerful enough, using Nvidia inspector (12xS [Combined: 2x2 SS + 4x OGMS (D3D only)] and DSR I can get a near perfect picture with no distance shimmer and eliminated the blurring/jaggies in front of clouds but suffer with framerate drops occasionally and have to back down things a little if there is a lot to render. BoS is basically CPU limited but your chip has good performance and the later models are not such a leap to warrant an upgrade yet, wait for the next Intel chips (Broadwell, 3rd quarter 2015?), however with a decent cooler you will see an improvement in min/average FPS with an overclock and your chip is good for that. For best graphics I would recommend GTX970 for enough headroom to get the best picture quality and overclock your 2500K to improve general performance Cheers Dakpilot
voncrapenhauser Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 (edited) I run a GTX680 2.0g on board with Win 7 64 ultimate OS, almost the same processor and ram as you with the settings on BOS at max with no problems. As the guys above have said I had to remove my WIFI adaptor to shoehorn it in as it is a Palit unit with 2 on board fans. Biggest graphics card I have ever had. Would think this card is no longer made now. Edited February 17, 2015 by voncrapenhauser
dburne Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 I am very pleased with my GTX 970 FTW card from EVGA...
pilotpierre Posted February 17, 2015 Author Posted February 17, 2015 Thanks gentleman, advice heeded. I will start shopping around as per your suggestions.
pilotpierre Posted February 18, 2015 Author Posted February 18, 2015 Did a check and both the 770 and 970 are the same dimensions as my 580 so size wont be a problem.
BeastyBaiter Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 I'm happy with the 2GB GTX 770 but I'd suggest spending the extra $100 for the GTX 970. The 770 just barely squeeks by at 60 fps under light action and does drop to 40-50 if lots is going on. Still very playable of course, but the extra $100 for 60 fps all the time is worth it imho. Rest of my system is as follows: I5 4690, 8GB DDR3, Win8.1. And yeah, the GTX 770 is a massive card. I have a truly full sized ATX case and it just barely fits.

Ala13_Kike Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I have one GTX970, and no problem with FPS, all time with DSR at 1600p, AA4x and ULTRA I can play with FPS>50, all time. (I have MSI Afterburner OSD playing at this simulator, and all time I have 60fps and one frametime of 16,5ms, for me this is a excellent result) But in your case Pilotpierre, your CPU it's a beast, but if you apply OC over she. Maybe the first step before to take a new graphic card, it's to try to apply OC in your CPU, without a high vcore increment to not change your CPU cooler. If you can increase the CPU Speed at 4ghz, no more, only change the multiplier and a little of vcore if necesary, your FPS will change with your actual graphic card, I'm sure
Soarfeat Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 I went from a GTX 760 to the GTX 970 and really like the card. There is a bunch of grief towards the GTX 970 because of a memory issue which came out after I had purchased the card but I thought I would share this article with you that explains it pretty well. http://wccftech.com/nvidia-geforce-gtx-970-memory-issue-fully-explained/ For me the card does well at 1920x1080 resoultion. Good luck with this !!!!!
Ala13_Kike Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 for the people that play at 1080p or for me that I play at 1200p (and higher screen resolution), this is not a real problem. And for people that play at 4k with one single GTX970, I really doubt that to have 4gb of vram or 3,5gb of vram will change the ""low perfomance"" that this graphic card will have playing at 4k.
-NW-ChiefRedCloud Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Always the newest you can afford and "always" at least 2 gigs of VRam or more. Chief
voncrapenhauser Posted February 19, 2015 Posted February 19, 2015 Always the newest you can afford and "always" at least 2 gigs of VRam or more. Chief That's my rule of thumb too and I simply do not have performance issues in BOS,CLOD or any flight sim TBH. I'm glad I built my rig when I did as I'm broke now lol.

I too have a 2500K in one of my bench rigs and I wouldn't suggest OCing on the stock cooler like SuDoKu says but I can attain upwards of 4.5GHz on this chip with stock voltages. Before I was liquid cooling the 2500K, I was able to get 4.2GHz clocks with a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 and still maintain respectable temperatures under a full CPU load. I wouldn't fret much about the thermal dynamics but be careful with tweaking voltages - Intel chips have a self-preservation feature and won't let you burn them up... They don't have a self-preservation feature for surges or overvoltages. There is no harm in doing so at these stock voltages and if you have a decent board it is as easy as changing the CPU multiplier in the BIOS. Edited February 19, 2015 by FalkeEins
Dutch2 Posted February 20, 2015 Posted February 20, 2015 read this before exchanging your GTX580 which is still a decent card btw, think it is more a matter of finding the right adjustments. . http://www.hwcompare.com/ http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-card-review,3107.html Also why not overclock you Vcard, you can use afterburner http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/afterburner-download-msi.html and do a Goolge search on how to.

Best choice would be used GTX 660Ti or GTX 760....that is if your looking for best buy. But if you want new go for the 960. If the money isnt an issue I would go for the 970. Its the best buy as 980 is too expensive for the performance it offers (compared to 970). I wouldnt consider 770 as it isnt much cheaper than 970 and Im not sure if you can find one new. Need to check. Edited February 20, 2015 by Zmaj76
Tyberan Posted March 1, 2015 Posted March 1, 2015 yeah I went from GTX580 (it was a powerful card but let down by shit drivers, always had driver issues with it), I now have a Gigabyte GTX 970 4Gb GDDR5. Its awesome, its the best value for money at the moment. I bought it end of last year I think it cost around $500AUD.
