Finished Campaign...

...mostly by flying the ME-109 earliest model version. Had fun. Now am planning to practice with the HE-111 and see what that brings me in the campaign.  

During the time that I spent playing the campaign, I kept expecting to see an iL2 with the "Guy In Back" protecting the rear of the aircraft. Did not run across one at all. Is that because that version of the iL2 was not operating during the winter of the Stalingrad offensives?

Seemed funny not to run into it when it is all over the advertisements.

Was I supposed to do something to "unlock" it?

The rear gunner on the IL-2 exists as an unlockable field mod. AI planes in the campaign unfortunately never use field mods (unless they're part of your flight, in which case they use whatever you have chosen for your own plane).

That's something I'd like to see change. I'd love to intercept some 109s with bombs, or a Pe-2 with the revised rear turret, or the IL-2 with a turret. Right now it's too predictable... If I see an IL-2 I can just pull up behind him without fear. I'd like to be worried that he might have a gunner

Wow. I never stayed behind the IL2 long enough to find out if it had a rear gunner or not. I went through the entire campaign and assumed it did just like the Pe2 so always used slashing attacks.

Just started flying the German birds after finishing the campaign earlier with VVS only.

 

It's like pushing the "EASY" button.  Honestly, what's the challenge here?  

 

First mission was an intercept against 3 Pe2.  I had the 20mm pods on and just popped them one after another, easy as pie.  Some LaGG 3s showed up so I just put the nose down and left them behind like they were tied to the ground.

I can see that my K/D ratio is going to skyrocket flying these uber kites.

 

Too funny.

Yup. I went VVS first on the basis that Luftwaffe would be easier against the tougher opposition as Pilot Level increased. The second phase was far easier!

To be honest, I would be happy if they would just include the premium planes as AI flights in the campaign. As a VVS pilot, it's a bit of a bore wondering, if you're gonna be up against Bf 109 F4 or G2 every single mission.
