Jade_Monkey Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Hi everyone! I have been wondering about autolevel for a while. Initially i thought it was "gamey" feature that would help us and I thought this technology didnt exist in WWII yet. Then I realized that when using Autolevel on the He111, there is a light that turns on the top left of the cockpit. So I started wondering if in fact this was a real feature in some WWII planes. Can anyone confirm whether this is just a game feature or an actual function? Thanks!
SYN_Ricky Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 The He-111 indeed had a two-level autopilot that could be used used for cruise flight and bombing runs.
Finkeren Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 'Autopilots' in the form of a gyroscopically controlled device that kept the plane flying straight and level were fairly common on larger aircraft in the 1940s. I know it existed on the He 111, but for the other BoS planes I don't know. BTW some of the autopilots of the day did sport pretty advanced analog computers and could do some pretty crazy stuff. Right after the war ended, in '45 or '46 IIRC, a U.S. aircraft (I think a DC-4) completed a transatlantic flight including takeoff and landing solely controlled by the autopilot.
Jade_Monkey Posted February 16, 2015 Author Posted February 16, 2015 So the autolevel on the fighters such as Bf109 and yak1 are not realistic but the one on the He 111 is?
SYN_Ricky Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 So the autolevel on the fighters such as Bf109 and yak1 are not realistic but the one on the He 111 is? Yes, I don't know of any single engined fighter of the time who had one. When the Ju-88 arrives with BOM he should have one too. Don't know about the Pe-2 though.
Finkeren Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 As I said, I don't know, but I doubt it. I've read accounts by German pilots who complained, that the 109 was tiring to fly on longer strentches, so I very much doubt that it had any kind of pilots assistance.
Sokol1 Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 (edited) Is "gamey" for fighters, but appropriated for He-111*, the real one have the Kurssteuerung autopilot (used in Me 110 and Ju 88) that in Course mode control rudder, and in Mode 22 control rudder, elevator and ailerons via servo motors. http://www.spruemaster.com/blog/wp-content/gallery/manual/Junkers_Ju-88A-1,%20A-5.pdf - Page 15 * I think that RL Pe-2 dont have autopilot, but this is needed in game to became the "pilot" when player go to bombardier cockpit. Even with the OM "on rails" FM is almost impossible do level bomber with CloD Blenheim just with rudder and elevator trim - unless have a human pilot and human bombardier (is possible) - so TF add some of German autopilot functions to this plane (a "gamey" compromise) to allow autolevel as in Pe-2. Sokol1 Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 (edited) This text say that Messerschimt Bf 109 G-10/R6 has autopilot (Patin Kurssteuerung). http://forum.warthunder.com/index.php?/topic/72922-real-messerschmitt-bf-109g-10r6/ The Me 110, He 111, JU88 Kurssteuerung has ability to set course. Jade_Monkey Posted February 16, 2015 Author Posted February 16, 2015 Thank you all for the clarifications! i was so curious
dburne Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Autolevel is also a carry over from ROF, as it has both autolevel and autopilot options.
VBF-12_Stick-95 Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Autolevel in BOS/ROF is there for 3 purposes: 1. Level Bombing 2. Bathroom breaks 3. Beer breaks 3
=AVG=Zombie Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 #3 is the most common use If I remember right from my time as a pilot in WW2..
No_85_Gramps Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 #3 is the most common use If I remember right from my time as a pilot in WW2.. Which leads back to #2...
Solmyr Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 If you want to know if a plane is equipped or not, try to activate it in "Expert" mode, if it comes, it's because the plane had such a feature, if not, it hadn't. Always have been impressed with this very early technology by the way.

Always have been impressed with this very early technology by the way. I don't think that's accurate. I usually fly on expert and I can always enable autolevel in all planes.

That's entirely incorrect. Every plane can use the autolevel feature, regardless of difficulty settings.
ShamrockOneFive Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 It's a life saver when you need to look away for a moment!
Feathered_IV Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 Handy when pressing I-key to look at the map too.

That's pretty stupid, so.. Should be available only on planes which actually had it, in "Expert" mode. Edited February 17, 2015 by Solmyr

Yakdriver Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 so you mean to say that people need to use the autolevel to fly online?i do not understand.

BraveSirRobin Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 so you mean to say that people need to use the autolevel to fly online? i do not understand. Yes, that's what I'm saying. 1. autolevel to get a beer 2. autolevel to go piss 3. repeat steps 1 and 2

Yakdriver Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 (edited) you guys need to get a proper grip.seriously.a BRIEFING includes, besides dropping a brown bomb and leaking some Oil, for me, at least one FULL bottle of Coke on the desk.and once that FULL Bottle of Coke is empty, it gets put UNDER the desk. and guess why it is there. Yes.a Silent Hunter attack run can be looooong. and takes your constant attention, too.If you were flying a 109 WITH a droptank, i might possibly, potentially see a point. But droptank... nope. No unlock for that.so you folks got to sit for a maximum of 90 minutes, and can not hold it in?age must be a horrible thing. I shall commit suicide when i hit the 45 mark. Go, have your autolevel.hope you get shot down while taking a Piss or grabbing a Beer. That would be fun... the rage... oh the rage! Edited February 18, 2015 by Yakdriver

This is the new definition of "hardcore player", lol? Theres a couple of hundred guys scattered around the world wearing headphones, a funny hat and sitting at a pc with a bottle of piss at their feet. I wonder what would constitute the greater challenge; Buttkicker or rudder pedals?
Yakdriver Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Well not exactly.the classic Pizza Boxes or the salad Bowl, or the empty Pan... stuff like that is still missing. But yea, it has happened hat a black bottle has had some yellow content in it.Brand me ridiculous. don't care.Still...for taking a bloody PISS you still got the pause button.and dont tell me anyone round here empties a Full tank of a 190 "online, where there is no pause" and autopilot is the only option, and if we dont get the autopilot the servers will be even emptier than they are now. I am Bonkers... i give you that....but i am not the only one round here...!!! 1

donkeycods Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 I like to think it gives me the ability to look around without veering way off course, which I would feel were I actually flying. So, in that sense, not entirely unrealistic. 1
216th_Peterla Posted February 22, 2015 Posted February 22, 2015 Autopilot level is a must, at least for me. Everytime I open the map helps me a lot. Is the only way I don't end crashing into trees with my IL2.
