Smoking Bf109 has no performance drop?

Several times in MP I experienced situation when Bf109 that was smoking white and gray smoke, performed like it has no leak (fuel, coolant). Yesterday I spent with my mates nearly 30min in 6km under and behind climbing German that was hit at the beginning of the fight at 500m.

I frequently fly 109s - Ive had leaks that barely bled my tank and was able to complete mission and then some.

 

Other times itll leak so fast I have to rtb right away, it depends. Not all leaks are the same.

So probably the issue is just about visualization, not DM itself. Slight leak seems like much bigger damage.
