oneeyeddog Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 I have been looking for a book on the IL-2 for some time. I was wondering if anyone has read this book and would care to share their opinion of it. Thanks.
unreasonable Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 I have not read it but I have read "Soviet Air Power in WW2" by Yefim Gordon, one of the authors, which is a very detailed and interesting book, seemed objective, he is clearly a serious scholar. 1
Beebop Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 I own this book. It is quite comprehensive with many issustrative photos. Most are in blackand white but there are a few color photos and several color profiles. It seems to be well researched and written. It covers the mechanical side of the IL-2 comprehensivly and includes some interesting stories about the pilots who flew them. I recommend this book to anyone interesed in the IL-2 and it's variants up to the IL-10.
sallee Posted February 15, 2015 Posted February 15, 2015 I second Beebop's comments.I have a lot of Gordon's books, including this, and they all seem very thorough, well-researched and well-written. Lots of illustrations as well.
oneeyeddog Posted February 16, 2015 Author Posted February 16, 2015 Thanks for the comments Gentlemen. I just received my copy of Gordons IL-2 book on Saturday and at first glance it looks Great. I find it difficult to locate good reference books on the various types of WW2 Russian aircraft, at least in my price range. Finding material on particular Allied and german aircraft is relatively easy by comparison. Two other books on the Airwar over Russia that I've read recently and can recommend are 'Black Cross Red Star, volume 3 - everything for Stalingrad' and 'Stopped at Stalingrad, The Luftwaffe and Hitlers Defeat in the East' 1942-1943. IL-2 BoS has really kindled an interest in this Theater of Conflict for me.
sallee Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 (edited) There is a series by Yefim Gordon (and others, I think). I'll have to look them out when I get home, on Yakovlev's Piston Engine Fighters, Polikarpov FIghters, Mikoyan's Piston Engine Fighters. I think they are published or distributed by Midland and they are relatively cheap. Edited February 16, 2015 by sallee
