Episode 4 is online! This Friday, we meet Hugh Dowding, one of the masterminds behind the British strategy during the Battle of Britain.

Audio From the Past [E04] - WW2 - Hugh Dowding Interview (1968)

Air Chief Marshal Hugh Caswall Tremenheere Dowding is considered one of the masterminds behind the victory in the Battle of Britain, one of the most prominent air battles in World War II. Nicknamed "Stuffy" by his men, Dowding was known for his humility and great sincerity. Fighter Command pilots came to characterize him as one who cared for his men and had their best interests at heart. In this 1968 interview with John Dyas, Dowding discusses his relationship with Churchill, the Luftwaffe strategy and the importance of radar and aircraft developments.

In reply to the question "Would you have done anything differently?", he ends with this cryptic comment. "Well, if my auntie had balls, she'd be my uncle."

Audio From the Past [E05] - WW2 - Sir Keith R. Park Interview (1961)

Sir Keith Rodney Park was one of the unsung heroes of the Battle of Britain. Commanding 11 Group Fighter Command, the New Zealander Air Chief Marshal was reponsible for the defence of London and South-East England. His squadrons bore the brunt of the fighting. In this 1961 interview, he discusses the political manoeuverings that resulted in Hugh Dowding and Park himself being removed from their Fighter Command posts at the end of the battle.

Audio From the Past [E06] - WW2 - Hubert Raymond “Dizzy“ Allen Interview (1978)

Squadron Leader Hubert Raymond "Dizzy" Allen became a highly controversial figure among RAF pilots when he wrote his account of the Battle of Britain "Who won the Battle of Britain?"

"Dizzy" retired a Wing Commander in 1965. He had high praise for his fellow pilots and the ground crews, but was less impressed with the top brass. In this 1978 interview with Piers Plowright, he paints a vivid portrait of daily squadron life and reveals how pilots spent their spare time, as well as giving details about dogfighting.

Audio From the Past [E07] - WW2 - Convoy Attack in Straits of Dover with Robin Duff (1940)

On August 22, 1940, BBC reporter Robin Duff describes a british convoy of merchant ships being attacked in the straits of Dover. As the ships are attacked by german bombers, Duff describes the Royal Air Force and Royal Navy putting up a stiff resistance to protect the convoy.

Audio From the Past [E08] - WW2 - Ronald Adams & the Operations Room Team (1945)

Wing Commander Ronald Adams was a man who combined an acting career with an extraordinary military career.

Adams was shot down by the Red Baron in the First World War and took his revenge as the RAF Fighter Controller of Hornchurch in the Battle of Britain. In this Home Service radio broadcast of May 22, 1945, he describes how the Operations Rooms worked, various code words used, limitations of radar and working while his aerodrome is being bombed.

Audio From the Past - WW2 - Avro Lancaster Crew Radio

This one is just awe inspiring. It's more genuine then any war movie, novel or anything.

I felt terrified listening to it. All the tension in what they're saying, yet they were still so calm.

What's more, its interesting the insistance on "battle comms" in games as if silence makes it more military or something, yet when you listen there, the talk is absolutely constant (in fact I can see no difference between the pilot shooshing his men and the leader in TS telling everyone to quiet down).

Thanks for sharing this, absolutely amazing,
