216th_Jordan Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 (edited) Hey guys! flying CFS's for a fairly long time you know that zoom is one of the most important features in a flightsim, to focus on a target, to screen the area around you, etc. BUT in all the time i have not found a Zoom configuration that pleases me. I set zoom on a slider because that's how i can zoom in and out quite fast and on a level that i can choose more or less exactly. Now almost every time i zoom it jiggles back and forth very fast, between to set points, its very annoying. I guess that many of you might have encountered the same problem and found a solution for it. So what my that solution look like? I've already turned down slider sensitivity in the saitek profile editor, but it helped just a little and isn't a smooth as it was before. Other solutions to successful zooming are very welcome too. Hoping for your answers! Cheers! Edited February 6, 2015 by Jordan
NobbyNobbs Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 (edited) Now almost every time i zoom it jiggles back and forth very fast, between to set points, its very annoying. How about ingame noise filter? But use it carefully cuz this option influences on all devices and all axis. Edited February 6, 2015 by NobbyNobbs
ST_ami7b5 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I have - zoom-in set to joystick hat switch 0° - zoom-out set to joystick hat switch 180°
9./JG27golani79 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I also have it on a hat switch although I´d like to use it on an axis but it´s not working for me if I bind it to an axis
216th_Jordan Posted February 6, 2015 Author Posted February 6, 2015 (edited) Thanks, i think i will try the noise filter option. IIRC zoom on a hat switch was way to slow for me, i need to be able to zoom in and out i just a slipsecond for my situational awareness to not get lost completely at times. I found that the small rotary knob right in front of the X52's mouse is fairly suited for zooming. Edit: Argh, just now saw that spelling error in the topic's name ._. You can set the zoom speed from slow to almost instant in settings. Not at my gaming comp ATM, but IIRC it's something like FOV change speed... Edited February 6, 2015 by ST_ami7b5
ema33ig Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 (edited) Hey Jordan, play with the cockpit view (Pan camera mode) Fov change speed: Fov change intertia: I have 40% for both and use the Coolie Hat on (MS FF2) for Zoom. Salut edit: ST_ami7b5 was faster! Edited February 6, 2015 by ema33ig
6./ZG26_5tuka Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Zoom axis do work fine in BoS. i myself use the small thumb slider on the X52 throttle for zooming. Be sure to check your camera settings as others pointed out.

Salut Wasn´t aware of this option - thanks for pointing it out. I´m surely gonna try it cause I don´t like the slow zoom on the hat switch at all :D @Zoomaxis How do you bind them? I´ve tried several times to bind a rotary axis to zoom ingame (X-55) but it didn´t work for me. Edited February 6, 2015 by golani79

Salut edit: ST_ami7b5 was faster! I'm using a POV hat for zoom and this never works for me! It's always super slow even though set to 100%. Maybe I need to re-install the whole game or something. OP - in order to smooth out axes (incidentally the same rotary as you on x52 - but I use mine for elevator) I use a noise filter "per axis" rather then per joystick, via a utility called joystick curves from xedoc + vjoy virtual joystick . It will take some time to set up, but once there - no going back. it helps with general axis as well. here's my setup: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/14123055/Il2CloD-109.jcprofile?dl=1 roll>roll pitch>pitch throttle>slider1 (rudder pedals!) noise filter: 1 rotary1>rotary1 (x52 thumb rotary) noise filter: 2 I wouldn't use more then 2 as it then jumps up in steps for some reason, 1 or 2 should make it more comfortable however. Atag thread about setting it up in CloD, same principles apply, except you need to find the bos ini file: http://theairtacticalassaultgroup.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6497 Edited February 6, 2015 by hnbdgr 1
216th_Jordan Posted February 6, 2015 Author Posted February 6, 2015 Thanks all for your answers, very useful information indeed! Will try it out when there's time for it I did a short test with noise filter to 0.1 and it seemed to work well on the first glance, but i've got to check that out again. Anyway that virtual joystick thing sounds pretty interesting!
beepee Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I have a Saitek X52 and use the small slider on the throttle. I have not had the same problem as you have. Maybe check the slider axis in the Saitek control panel?
SharpeXB Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I have the zoom set to one of my toe axis on the rudder pedals. Sure I lose R and L brakes but those are only used occasionally (for WWII planes I have those on HOTAS buttons) whereas I use the zoom constantly. It allows a hands off use of the command which is especially useful in complex sims like DCS A-10C where every HOTAS command is used for the plane.

6./ZG26_5tuka Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I tried to set this up but it was pretty jerky. How did you smooth yours out with the noise slider thing? Hm, I didnt have to smooth anything. Worked smooth and fine from the first day I played back in EA up till now
216th_Jordan Posted February 7, 2015 Author Posted February 7, 2015 Hmm never had it working smooth neither, thats why after some trial and error i moved from the thumb slider to the thumb rotary..maybe i will give it another try. Did you set a noise filter stab?
Willy__ Posted February 9, 2015 Posted February 9, 2015 I use the mouse wheel to zoom back and forth and never had any problems, didnt have to set up sensitivity or smothness/noise filter. It has been this way since EA, and my joystick has a mousewheel built into the throttle as seen on the image below, making it perfect tool to zoom in/out.
LLv32_kankkis Posted February 11, 2015 Posted February 11, 2015 (edited) I also have it on a hat switch although I´d like to use it on an axis but it´s not working for me if I bind it to an axis I have that problem first too, but Axiszooming working very nicely in BoS, it another category than buttonzooming, if i remember right, pilot head category. Check out another category, it works. Kankkis Edited February 11, 2015 by kankkis 1
