It's great with the team fusion patch.

In fact, they're introducing u-boats and 'flyable' vehicles.

3 quid lol that is nuts. Definitely a bargain for anyone who doesn't have it.

Plus the money goes to 1C so it helps support BoS!

I use it as a blinker on the balcony to keep pidgeons away.

I picked up Cliffs of Dover for about twice that a couple of months back, but that's the price of a decent table wine here. Downloaded the TF patch, and it's brilliant. Hard to get better value for money that that.

Anyway, today there's a review here http://www.pcpilot.net/view_article.asp?ID=6868&pubID=8&t=1&s=0&p=1&i=10

Agreed, I got it in spring of last year, have had it installed all this time, and never took the time to get into it.

Now I have, with the TF mod.  Just started last Saturday, on vacation here at home this week so have put a few hours into it. I decided what the heck, never really got into CEM and such, figured while we wait for BOS I would spend some time with it in Cliffs.

I gotta say, I am pretty darned impressed, and having quite a lot of fun with it. Still learning, but ain't doing too bad and have learned a lot in last few days.

I`d like to get back on the saddle and try the TF patch. What do I need to know?

Is it compatible online on Steam?

My first copy of CloD made it's own flight out of my window.

Seeing the news, I have bought it for $5 and found out it's a Steam version they sell. The version of the game is 1.11.20362.

I went for TF patches 3.0 and 3.01 minipatch. Loaded the game and ...

Setting a joystick in that is a nightmare. Setting keys siilarily to 1946 is close to impossible, I gave up after a while. Many keys despite being set don't do what they're supposed to, in both vanilla and TF versions.

TF patch: while great, I still have major "lag out" in single campaign.

Multiplayer: just checked 5 minutes ago. One server online with 5 people in it, pass protected. Noone on Hyperlobby.

It would make it's second flight out of the window if it wasn't a digital purchase.

I truly hope flops like CloD will not happen again for virtual pilot community, like EVER again. Selling a product in such condition is a disgrace. Even for $5.

It is a steal at that price.. I paid the full price for it when it was released.. It isn't too bad now.. I had to do a work around for zoom view and the FFB issue still sucks... but it is at least enjoyable and well worth $5.

Why do complainers like to say stuff like this? just checked and there's at least 40 on ATAG no password.

Thanks for the hint, purchased!

Most people have problems with the controls because they don't realize that there are several controls that are specific to individual planes.  Think of the control menu as similar to DCS where only certain functions will work with certain planes.  For instance, you won't be setting your bomb distribution series, arming switch, bomb delay etc., for a spitfire.  Just like you won't have toe brakes for a spitfire (right and left brakes with rudder pedal) as those are activated by a single lever and controlled proportionally with the rudder instead.

Controls to me work exactly like they do in 46.  All my axis and other key presses show up automatically.  Because of the complexity of the controls within the cockpit of each individual plane there are many who use a different control profile depending on the plane they choose.

For beginners, here's a very nice tutorial on everything you need to know from setup, to joining MP servers, to best performance settings etc: http://theairtacticalassaultgroup.com/forum/showthread.php?t=5058&p=52711

For helpful information regarding proper flight manuals, pilots notes etc., for the individual planes, see the wiki here:  http://www.theairtacticalassaultgroup.com/wiki/doku.php?id=start

As far as online, noone uses HL for IL2COD as it actually has it's own lobby.  There was over 70+ players on the server just a few minutes ago and has roughly this same number during peak hours almost everyday.  MP is very fun.

This is the home page of our forums where you can see instant player numbers on the server.  If you have any questions or problems, we can surely answer them here: http://theairtacticalassaultgroup.com/index.php

Thanks for that, Bliss. You answered to quite a few questions I had myself also :) (I am rather new on CloD also, actually started it only after hearing that now after TF patches it's finally playable)

My bad, there was 1 lobby at the time of my post.

I purchased Cliffs from Steam in March of 2012 - paid full price. I had it installed, but had set it aside for a while and watched all the goings on related to it, along with following TF's progress on their mod.

Finally , this past week, I had some time off and decided it was time I gave the modded version a go.

First thing I did, was check out the Atag  forums, beginners guide Bliss is referring to, and asked questions on things I could not quite get my head wrapped around.

This was last weekend. As of today, I am comfortably flying missions, having some success, using CEM for the first time ever in a flight sim, and enjoying every moment of it. Cliffs has truly evolved into a beautiful, in depth combat sim.

First thing I did, was start with the assigning the axis on my Warthog HOTAS, along with my Saitek Combat pedals. Then I got into all the key commands, took some out I knew I would never use, there was an essential list someone on Atag forums, and I made sure I assigned button presses on my HOTAS so I had all the essentials at the least, plus added a handful more.

I did not find the control assignments much problematic, once I realized I had to make sure I clicked save or apply after doing each command. I then exported my commands to another location, so I can load them back in should something crazy happen and they get reset.

Now I have everything as I want, and working very well.

Cliffs can be daunting, and see overwhelming at first - heck it did for me, and I spent a few years flying IL2 early on, which is main reason why it just sat installed on my hard drive for well over a year. I would highly encourage anyone interested, to spend some time researching the materials that ATAG have available on their forums, especially the beginners guide and essential keys. I did, and it made something that just seemed to overwhelming to me, fairly easy once I knew more and got into doing it.

Those TF guys, are truly doing what their tag line says - keeping the dream alive... I will get lots of enjoyment now, out of this sim.

If you have not yet, check out the TF update from today on the forum over there, nice video showing new particle effects coming in the next patch.

I am just curious.. why do you carry such a cloud of negativity with you? You poo poo and shoot down so much stuff man.. for crying out loud.. do you ever see a glass as half full or are you just a half empty kind of guy.. No offense man but I had to ask.. I don't get it.. :( Even this post acknowledging an error is a backhanded slap that just totally ignores the rest of the picture.. thast there are still a bunch of folks enjoying both sims you just mentioned..

"do you ever see a glass as half full or are you just a half empty kind of guy", but everyone knows that glass is (almost always) completely full, other half full of liquid and other half gaseous...

Sorry, I just had to say it...

Bearcat :) you couldn't be more wrong about me, I am actually a very positve and open minded person. It is true I am very opinionated and stand firm by my beliefs regarding anything, really. It doesn't mean I'm stubborn though. I am keen to say I was wrong when I understand I was. Never had a problem with saying "I'm sorry".

The deal here is that I like to present the people with the other side of the medal, if you follow, to make them understand every aspect of any decision they make. It's a straighthforward thing. Enjoying anything is one thing, but you have to be aware of consequences and be prepared for the unexpected. Feel like eating  whole bunch of plums and drinking milk afterwards? No problem! Just be aware of possible stomach issues later :)

Both sides of the story are important to make sure one makes a right decision, for them.

No offence taken.

This might not be the right thread, but I ask anyway... Can someone tell me, is there some way of changing your pilot profile in CloD? Or actually the name of the pilot? Like if I would join virtual squad or something, how can I put that in my name in CloD? And one more thing, in quick missions, is there some way to change the airforce you are flying for? I mean if default in some mission is italian, can I change it to german and vice versa?

I'm assuming Stray is from the USA and to be fair the numbers online on CLOD are very low during the evening time over there. I'm from teh UK but work wierd shifts and I am often awake at 10-11pm US time zone and when I look there's not many people online. As he says there are however a lot of people still on HL.

At the end of the 5 bucks is nothing for CLOD and it's worth having if your PC is reasonable but offline play is pretty horrible and there is very little choice online either. It's one of those things you have to be in the mood for what is on offer with CLOD rather than be able to chose what you want in IL2.

Shouldn't people from the US be able to find other people from the US? surely he is not the only person in the US to own Clod/

Posted

Yep but peak time is really around 22:00 UK time where you have Brits Euros and the East/Central US coming on as well. It shows that with both continents online the numbers during the week around around 50 people, one the Euros and Brits start going to bed the numbers drop rapidly.

I'd imagine after the next TF patch the numbers will go up again, I'm not flying at the moment because I have a 2560x1440 resolution monitor and I am sick of having to drop that down to 1080p just to be able to see aircraft, it looks really ugly on a large screen. I've been playing ROF at the moment and it's a breath of fresh air not having this LOD problem and being able to run the sim in my native res.

Mprhead,

Your in game name are the one set in STEAM account.

Are displayed in online and offline mission (as well in another STEAM games).

If you put STEAM in offline mode, your name in Single Player are "Fair Light".

In SINGLE missions you can fly another planes - if they are included in the mission - in case just click over pilot figure next plane names.

If the mission are done only with German planes you can't fly as Italian (in case need edit the mission in FMB to include this planes).

In "Realism" settings un-tick "Cannot select planes".

In QM you can fly any plane, just click on default plane figure and select.

For example, need training take off with He.111, load the QM "Cross crountry" -  default plane are a Blenheim - just change for He.111 (or any flyable).

Setting a joystick in that is a nightmare. Setting keys siilarily to 1946 is close to impossible,

After I forgot the "il-2 heritage" I thought it was easier to configure - despite some bad translation and faults - than in "1946": select a function, press a button/key, move axis... Apply.

In 1946 you need guess the spot to click for set axis, that confuse novices, in CloD™ is show a box.

Tuto: http://www.justflight.com/supportfaq/il2-cliffs-of-dover#FAQ2

And found some nice improvements over 1946 system:

- I can modify a axis behavior with a key press. Example: elevator axis (Y) can be a brake pressing space bar (or any key) or some joy button, this allow me use use this axis as "park brakes/wheel chock".

- I can use any key as modifier for /buttons - Example: Joystick button 2 fire cannon, if I hold space bar joystick button 2 drop bombs - so no risk of dropping bombs by accident and don't need set a exclusive button for this rarely used command - at best is used by 1/2 seconds per mission. :)

- I can make copy of commands and assign different buttons key for this copy, not limited to two possible combinations like in 1946.

- Since GUI divided in various sector, I can set one key/button to do two things of different sectors at same time. Example, press button 5 and Center Vision (Snap View sector) and at same time set FOV in 70 degrees (Camera sector).

- I can set different keys profiles for specif aircraft and save then with different names, example Fighter X, Bomber Y.... and load this profile inclusive in game/in flight (or alter key assignments in flight - like in 1946).

Really, was a steep ahead, and of course have some drawbacks, like the lack of possibility to set curves for joystick response.

I bought CloD at launch and my hope turned to bitter disappointment as it became clear the mess they made at launch was never going to be cleared up despite it having some promise. I've reloaded it onto my Steam list to give it another go so is that all I need to do to before installing the Team Fusion or is there a beta patch I need first?

That should be all you need, there is a TF mini patch too.....3.1 I think.

Fair enough ..

How is the DCS MP different from CoD's..? I have yet to do DCS, RoF or CoD online.. I guess I have beern spoiled by HL.. I think HL had a lot to do with the longevity of IL2.
