How to resize thumbnails

Recommended Posts

Dumb question from IT challenged dinosaur - I have seen the answer somewhere but cannot find it with search:

I have a picture that I want to post. I can attach it to the file, and show it in the forum, but only as a thumbnail. I need to resize to show detail.
How do I do this?

Free +1s for the answer ;),  think of it as being equivalent to helping an old lady across the road....

If you want to post full size, I think you need to host externally and link it from there. Personally I prefer thumbnails, because they don't clutter up the topic as much as large images do. Clicking on whatever I'm interested in seems to be a fair deal.

Thanks charitable guys, you both get +1s from this account for confirming my suspicion that I am indeed an idiot, which you may already have concluded from my posts in a certain other thread ;)

I thought that putting a bigger picture in the thread would make it easier for me to follow my own logic when I compose a thread, but I shall just stop worrying about it now.

Yes Chief that is exactly what I had in mind, so that people who are sort of following a thread but are too lazy to click on a thumbnail which is too small to read easily can be more easily convinced of my truth and virtue....

well, then put your image on Postimg.org first, like i do.
once you have sent the image there they will give you the "DIRECT LINK", that you can put in your post
and then get the full size image.

hit the foto symbol below the smiley when you write the post - and paste the direct link in there.

Heey unreasonable,

It is really easy.

here is how to do it:

Step 1: upload your image to a website like imgur. (there are also other sites where you can upload images) if the image is already on the web just start with step 2!
Step 2: when the image has been uploaded, right click on the image and chose: open image in new tab
Step 3: copy the url of the picture.
Step 4: time to create the post. start a new post or reply.
Step 5: click on the image button in the tools bar in the chat (see image)

Step 6: past the url in the url box that will pop up.
Step 7: click OK and you are done.

Some sites won't let you post higher resolution images and will mess up the image to reduce size. Photobucket is like this. imgur doesn't change the resolution up to a point, but they too will use aggressive jpeg compression to reduce the size of the image. Postimage is pretty good, and free, because you can upload and post images up to five megs. the catch is that you have to click on them to get the full resolution, but even the thumbnail they is is pretty large:

This one is in .png and just shy of five megs in size (click on it foir the full resolution):

By the way, Yakdriver, if you use the direct link, you won't see the full size image when you click on it. You'll see it if you use the one in the  "hotlink for forums" slot.

This one is done with the direct link and the one above with the hotlink for forum tab. See the difference when you click on them?

Jaws, at the moment I am not needing a really high res image: I already have a photobucket, so I will try to do that.

Mostly I just need to be able to do a chart for a proposed Fw190 gear change rule.

But first let me see if I can get an old Il2 1946 DCG campaign pic into the post....

Got it!
