Favourite War movie?

Submarine simulator fans gravitate towards Das Boot:

Flight Sim fans seem to gravitate towards The Blue Max or Battle of Britain, depending on which era interests them:

The Blue Max video is from my channel :D

What's your personal favourite war film?

My favourite is Das Boot, it captures the futility of war perfectly. I've got the 3 hour version :D

Although I love The Blue Max and Battle of Britain a lot too. They're brilliant films, and I adore the replica aircraft.

Another favourite of mine is Tora! Tora! Tora! It's the perfect Pearl Harbour movie. Not many people have seen it though, which is a shame.

The Cruel Sea, and the Dambusters for me!

Also after walking the track I think the modern film "Kokoda" captured the feeling of the environment of the battle ground fairly well.

Me too. ;)

Yes das Boot is good, but my favorite movie would be Stalingrad from 1993 by Joseph Vilsmair.

No wacky super heros, no glory boys, but a fair idea of the horror those who where there

went through.

WWII films - Battle of Britain and Battle of Midway are my favourites. Memphis Belle is a bit cheesy but not bad.

WWI - Aces High is pretty good.

The Red Baron

I'm not really a fan of that one. It completely misrepresents the Red Baron. Edited by Cybermat47

Ok, now, please, PLEASE don't crucify me for this...

I kinda like The Red Baron.

And Fortress is a great movie! The CGI looks like a game, sure, but the acting, and the fact that it remains interesting even though there are only two battle scenes at the beginning and end of the film, makes it a great film.

And the end credits are really funny in the last few seconds.

Tora! Tora! Tora! and Battle of Britain are the definite air combat WW2 movies. Midway is just okay, although the new japanese production Yamamoto movie has a great flair and the typical eastern way of looking at events which we overlook.

Blue Max is a must. Enough said. It has, in my opinion, the best aerial photography ever in history of cinema. Of course the classic WWI birds help a lot to the air choreographies.

Also being a musket era buffoon I must point out Revolution, the Killer Angels trilogy ( only 2 movies though ) with Gods & Generals and Gettysburg ( third movie is cancelled afaik ).

The Longest Day, black and white version still remains a very dear movie for me, watched the colour remaster but... didn't felt the same.

But yeah, too many good movies, especially late 80's and up to mid 90's.

Awww... I really liked those two movies. It's a shame that they're not doing another.

I am a fan of Gallipolli.

It is interesting that 12 O'Clock High made so many peoples' lists.  When I wander around Nevada, if I find myself spending the night in Ely (say for the Octoberfest dinner / beer train)  I always stay at the Hotel Nevada, which used to be a stop over point for Hollywood stars.  I always ask for the Jimmy Stewart room, which really should be called the 12 O'Clock High room.

Not a movie, but I really like Band of Brothers.

HERETIC! ;) Kidding aside, The Red Baron wasn't awful. Sure, it had a lot of things wrong with it but it wasn't that bad. Red Tails is the high on my list of worst war movies, especially given the budget and hype it had. I found it sad for all the wrong reasons...it did little justice to the story of the Tuskegee Airmen thanks to the poor writing, which left most viewers entirely detached from the characters (don't get me started on the dogfight sequences  ).

Battle of Britain is one of my favorite aviation films, the dogfight sequences are quite believable, IMO. I'd love to see that movie shown a little CGI love, as Dark Blue World seemed to have done to some of the sequences it used.

Forrest Gump (tenuous but valid I feel)

Well, the war affects some of the main characters for the rest of the film, so I guess it counts :)

Finest War Film ever made has to be Come and See. But for those of an Anime inclination Grave of the Fireflies is very powerful, even though doesn't quite deal with actual fighting.

Battle of Britain is pretty good...

If you're interested in epic films in the style of the Longest Day then a good one is the "Liberation" series, can't remember all the names off the top of my head but it's along the lines of: "the fiery bulge" and "the battle of Berlin". Basically it's a set of 5 (or maybe more...) Soviet films made in the early 70s detailing Soviet battles from Kursk to Berlin. Doesn't go too much into propaganda but I find it fascinating simply for the epic scale of the battle sequences which just makes it extraordinary. Some of it is a bit how you do historically but the detailing of the operations as well as of the Generals are pretty good...

If you're into propaganda films then "The Fall of Berlin" (1949) isn't too bad... if it's possible to get past the constant references to Stalin's brilliance.

Both those sets of Soviet films aren't ruly great, but they are an interesting change to your standard American dominated propagand... (ahem) war films.

A really good one is "the Brest Fortress" (2010 I think...) which is very, very good. But a problem with many Soviet (and post- Soviet) films are that they cannot stop portraying the German Soldiers as evil monsters... (apart from interestingly a scene in one of the "Liberation" films)

Posted (edited)

well...germans have Stalingrad and Das boot....russian Idi i smotri (Come and see).....americans have Platoon, Apocalypse now, Black hawk down....Ofcourse there is more (some of them are listed in this topic) but these are the best o the best IMHO....

My grandfather from my mothers side, fell defending the fortress of Brest

Just got to be 24 years old, my mom has only very vague memories of him and some

pictures.

This is him in a officers uniform, although I have no idea what rank?
