Pringliano Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 (edited) I intend to restart using il-2 BoS sooner than later ... I will probably try to dedicate more time to the Campaign missions, and I have a question: - When we start a Campaign mission we are given various options ( Short / Long and Normal / Expert ). 1) I guess "Long" mode includes all phases of the flight, startup, taxi, takeoff, climb to cruise and enroute to mission point... RTB, landing, taxiing to parking lot and engine shutdown... Is this it ? 2) So, if we have a successful mission, will flying a "Long" mission give us more points than using the "Shortcuts" :-) ? What about Normal vs Expert ? 3) And, so far I have tried to skip any bombing missions because I really didn't learn how to properly use the bombs / rockets in il-2 BoS. Do those missions give more points than the fighter-based ones ? Thanks for any help ;-) Edited January 18, 2015 by BOS-jcomm
Yakdriver Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 3) by default, there are 60 points for a successfull mission. Bomber, fighter, stormo, whatever. drop a bomb on your target, and crush it. +60p Want more points? Carry more bombs or more guns, so you have the chance to drop another one on another target....of course... that next target you destroy...also gets you points. ...or a Flak round in your virtual face.
Siipiorava Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 The expert mode gives you 2 times the points normal mode gives you. In successful landing and takeoff you get 30 points each.
Finkeren Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 (edited) In answer to number 3: Yes bombing missions are generally more profitable than any other type of mission and are also fairly safe. It's definately the best and easiest way to get points for the three planes that can do bombing missions (He 111, Ju 87 and Pe-2) In bombing missions points are distributed according to the number of buildings destroyed in the target area. The more buildings, the more points you can potentially get. Therefore it's a good idea to pick missions with targets that have lot's of buildings. The most profitable by far are supply dumps followed by railroad stations, with airfields coming in a distant third. Avoid bridge attacks and especially artillery bombings, as they are harder targets to hit with smaller payoff (that's if you only care about the points anyway.) When bombing be sure, that you hit the right target. Especially with supply dumps they are often situated on the outskirts of a town and can be hard to tell from a block of buildings. Once you get the bigger 1800kg bombs for the German bombers earning points become a breeze. Even a close miss will often do enough damage to the target to let you complete the mission. When you get the insanely huge blockbuster bomb for the Heinkel, it can of course be tempting to go for the big boom, but it's actually better to bring 2x1800kg, one of those is enough to completely destroy the target, and often there'll be another target very close to drop the other one on. A town with a railway station will often also have a supply dump and vice versa, and you get points for destroying buildings there as well, not just the target. Bombing civilian buildings don't earn you points (though it did when the campaign was first released allowing people to earn close to 1000 points in one mission by dropping a 2500kg bomb on a supply dumb in an urban area) A good mission on expert with two 1800s in the He 111 can earn you 500 points with ease. dburne Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 Just out of curiosity, how does one start the campaign over?
ST_ami7b5 Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 Just out of curiosity, how does one start the campaign over? Buys another copy of BoS
dburne Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 Buys another copy of BoS Ahh, maybe there is hope in selling mine then!
SharpeXB Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 (edited) My advice is to fly the campaign on Expert if you want to earn points quickly. It's not as important how many targets you get as long as you're successful which usually only means getting a few. Once you get mission success it's your choice to risk getting hit by trying for more. Long missions can get you a lot of points because taking off and landing in Expert is an extra 120 points. But only if you suceed with the mission. It takes about 6 successful a Expert missions to unlock everything for a plane. You need to make it to the exit point to get your score and the game treats landing at a field other than your home base as a crash landing so if you don't have time get home just quit in the air once you've reached the exit point. Also targets which aren't your objective don't get you many points if you fail the mission. If you want more, go hunting after suceeding. But don't get drawn off your objective on the way to the target, there's usually some tempting action but stay focused. The Dickta Boelcke of XP getting is quit when you're ahead! When you succeed, head for the exit point and live to fight another day. Edited January 20, 2015 by SharpeXB
Bearcat Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Just out of curiosity, how does one start the campaign over? I just started it over. Especially for some of the Stuka missions because it seemed to me that the battle was a lot tougher for the german side at the end of the campaign. Now do you mean actually starting it over with fresh medals and such .. like resetting the campaign? I wouldn't want to risk loosing all the unlocks I have gained.. If you are just talking about doing the missions again.. just go back.

I missed. Time to go homeBOOM! :-D PS you also get credit for completing a mission if your wingmen take out the target. Edited January 20, 2015 by SharpeXB

I have a question - isn't it overly difficult for a player to start a fresh campaign with high pilot level (especially for bombers?). Thanks for an answer.
Bearcat Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 I heard that but I have not seen it.. I really don't do heavies.. so the PC is doing all the work for the He-111 .. I just want to get the unlocks done. I will most likely never ever fly it.. but the way my mind works I just want to get all that I bought..so .. here I am.

Bearcat Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 Lol.. That was my experience as well... That is why "Expert" was not an option for me....
SharpeXB Posted January 20, 2015 Posted January 20, 2015 (edited) Yep but good luck in finding your targets (which are there some where). Chief To find targets in Expert. Look closely ;-) Or. Follow your AI wingmen and their laser eyesight. Look at your O map and the ground targets are shown there if you press "I" Listen to the radio. If you hear "I'm Wounded!" And you see a plane smoking and another shooting at it. That's the bad guy. Your wingmen will also call out bandits Look for flak shooting at planes demanding on who's territory you're over. There's also maybe a 6th sense from years of fighting this AI in RoF but you can just tell who the enemy is by how they maneuver. Someone coming straight at you is probably not friendly. For artillery look at which way they're pointing. Or see which direction the tanks are driving and those are easy to ID from the turret placement. Friendly ground units sometimes shoot up a green flare at you. And of course if someone shoots at you that's the enemy ;-) Edited January 20, 2015 by SharpeXB
