and we don't seem to have the option of using custom skins anymore in mp ?

By the way, can other players see the skin or are you the only one who can see it ?

To see a custom skin used by another player, you must have that skin installed in your own game folder otherwise you will just see the default skin

We need a central repository for all skins that is queried by the launcher every time you start the game to check for new skins and automatically update your folders, this would be the most efficient and productive.

That might work for a little while, but in RoF (with its poll submission/approval process which tends to dampen (somewhat at least) the number of skins available) there are now over 4,800 approved fictional/personal skins and over 2,700 approved historical skins.  Of course, RoF's been out a long time and has a lot more plane types in it, but as BoS evolves the sort of central repository/automatic update mechanism you suggest would almost certainly choke and burn under numbers even a fraction as large as RoF has experienced.

Oleg had it worked out -  litterally 100's of 1000's, if not a million skins have been done for that game, only the standard, official planes.

and all could be used online, because they were transferred via the net.

transfer over net, even if only a scaled down version (1024square? First lower MIP level?) would be awesome.

the "must have skin in own game" is a sort-of working solution, but... yea... the wish for something more complete remains.

I hear you. Not perfect, but  I think the best implementation of skins, is done in CLOD, where the panel lines, rivets, stencils and weathering are not part of the skin. All the skiners have to do is paint.

That way, skin files can be much smaller in size, still look good, and could be easily downloaded by the game.

 The only mistake they made, was not to limit the size of the image we can use, as people still upload huge image files as skins and that can cause problems online.

That would be kind of "aw sucks" with all the artifacts that screw up your pixel-perfect Noseart...

- even the DDS transformation of BoS results in the destruction of the pixel perfect details... but the camera does not show that  -

 

would 32bit bitmaps be perfect?
But then file size goes through the roof, and transfer via net is a hoRrrRRrrRible idea. :P

The official servers don't allow skins. This are the ones that start with BOS. The rest are perfectly fine
