What are the things that get you mad in a flight sim?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Or someone jumping in your backseat without asking (and it is locked) and guiding his guys to your flight only to jump out before you get bounced. That happened Saturday to me and a squad mate three times and everytime the guy jumped out he went back to the other side right away. We spawn a lock the seat right away I don't know how they are getting in!  Maybe they can join faster than I can click lock.

This is the worst thing I've ever read.  :o:  :o:  :o:

Those guys should be life banned.

Sniper rear gunners firing a one kill shot to your engine/head from their doomed plane spinning down in flames...

I have heard that so many times, several times also when I myself was maning the rear gun and pasting the nasty little

follower. It is not that hard to plaster a aircraft from the rear gunner position!

Having to connect to a server to play an SP mission.

'Sterile' enviroment

RPG game elements

RPG elements make you mad??

Some of the best single-player campaigns created in IL-2 1946 are those with roll play stories that work to draw you as the pilot into the games wartime setting and environment. Also dynamic campaigns that make you feel part of a squadron with npc pilots that you start to care about whether they live or die.

Or did you mean something else when you say rpg elements?

Bad AI with FM cheats is what I hate most.  In Multiplayer it is people gaming the game and vulching.

From an airplane on fire and missing a wing?  You're good!

No but from a fairly well holed bomber several times, and that was no art, as the attackers wher extremely close.

Missing them would have been more of an art.

I can accept that!  I don't mind being shot up from a wounded bird, but one that is tumbling out of control is harder for me to accept.

Yeah I need to bring it up on the ROF forums, maybe Jason and team can add the lock before spawn like I said.

You don't get a notice that "gamer of games/loser joined your plane" so If you don't see the gunner moving unlike an AI you have to keep checking the manage crew screen. Hard to do in flight. I keep my pistol handy..I wont kick 'em I'll just shoot them for the kill!  :)

Better would be to require someone to ask permission before they can join as your gunner.

That too..but that should be understood between players to begin with. If you're gaming the game you won't ask. I did see a vote to ban a player for not asking and shooting the aircraft and pilot for the fun of it? When he was called out on it he logged off quick and fast.

All seeing AI annoys me greatly. 360 vis through terrain, weather and own aircraft.... ruins single player gameplay

Unfortunately that is common practice in several games! In Red Orchestra people will also just hijack your tank, and do all kinds of loony things to

get you to leave the game. So it is not RoF alone.

Nothing can make me really mad in a flightsim ... apart from people claiming to fly "historical missions" when one look into a decent history book can reveal that claim to be hollow and false. What makes me resigned/sad are:

1.) Fighter fixation and dogfight menthality

2.) Inaccurate aircraft ratios and over-presence of fighters/fighter-bombers

3.) Campaigns with an utterly unrealistic background story

4.) Wrong OOBs and aircraft types for a unit (i.e. JG 53 and Fw 190s)

5.) Insufficient research into historical tactics / mission profiles

Yes, I know that I'm picky but to me history is a basic necessity for me to enjoy a campaign/mission.

History is definitely important but one thing I liked just as much were good aircraft matches which two sides using correct tactics. They could go on for ages and you would be truly punished for making a mistake. That's partly why I miss HL so much. I was great to be able to see that there were squads online and them PM individuals from them to see if they would like a 4v4 etc. Good times they were and something that has been sorely missing from flight sims ever since imho.

AI

Just AI

With its complete lack of tactical skills and its strange blend of "partial omniscience" and lack of awareness, its often suicidal behavior and its ability to rack up ridiculous kill/loss ratios on almost every mission is the single biggest immersion killer for an offline pilot like me.

I agree, the biggest immersion killer in offline. Especially, the friendly AI, they constantly remind me that I am just playing a game.

I've started playing online on the ATAG server recently, and it's actually a relief not having those friendly Artificially Incompetent squad mates around me, even though I could sure use some help sometimes

I haven't got much experience with online play yet, but something I've been thinking that maybe could induce a more realistic approach: to get your score not only should you RTB, but any kills you made you have to claim, with details of app. time and locations, with a better chance of confirmation if another player has witnessed it? I don't know if it's doable, but I think it would add immensely to the immersion aspect, and also result in more realistic mission/ kill ratios (and perhaps even more realistic kill/ death ratios  ).

My flying ratio was 20 offline/80 online and I really didn`t feel the IL2 AI was so bad. Often flying straight, unaware of the enemy, most of the time being cannonfodder. The thing that really put me off was its gunnery skills. Perfect steady aim even on average skill level. Also dumping ridiculous amounts of ammo into one target at a time. Flying an online scenario where most aircraft were driven by AI felt so cheap.

Gunners getting ridiculous shots. Remember getting my engine killed approaching a B17 from 6 o clock high when I was... 800m away.

That's the reason I choose full-difficulty servers (few lamers and bug exploiters) and above all I always host my MP session using password, so I play only together with trusted people.

You know, you are training with '42 planes and a guy joins and picks up a Spitfire 25lbs... I can't stand these kind of players.

As a bomber jockey

got to be

1)  ( Cliffs of Dover online ) Being unable to take gunners position and get rid of the pilot who picked me as easy target

2) As above and when I've managed to nurse my stricken Bf110 to French coast and lower landing gear

In iL2 or RoF my kills would have increased

I always laugh at people who complain about head on collisions. It takes two to tango, so what's good for the goose is good for the gander. Collisions generally though are as much about lag, no risk environment and poor pilotage rather than evil intent.

My pet hates are:

being accused of kill stealing when I don't

Vulching, attacking spawning in aircraft.

Giving up time and position chasing a contact only to have them moan that they should be left alone because they're damaged, want to fly home unmolested because they like the challenge and anyway you're just trying to steal someone else's kill.

Allied to the above is, doing the right thing, providing top cover over two duelling aircraft and then being called a nair-do-well because you then attack the damaged enemy after he has shot down your companion.

Being able to shoot at ranges that are beyond what was reasonable possible in real life.

What makes me mad is shooting pilots in parachutes(hapend to me):

In real life Walter Nowotny (german ace) went to hitler himself to make him retract the order to shoot at pilots hanging from parachutes. So even hitler saw that shooting bailed out pilots is wrong.

I saw people arguing online over who is the real jg77.Like they are second grade children. And as Galland himseld gaved them the jg77 name  .

People saying: in real life this plane would be this and that and i would have won the duel.

Childish arguments in general make me mad.

Amongst other things:

- realizing for the nth time that the contact at 2 o'clock high is actually just dirt on my monitor.

- trying to get a heavily damaged plane back home and then getting jumped by 3+ fighters who just want to score a cheap kill

or those that fly with cockpit open to exploit it :D

Patrolling the Uk coast for ages keeping the engine nicely, throttling up to intercept..and blowing some gaskets after 2 seconds, struggle back to base with a coughing engine...and wonder what went wrong....

I could have written the vulching part..but just take another field...

Hm. You just described 99.9% of what's going on online.

Wait... make that 100% just to be sure.

That will continue to happen on public servers be sure :) .

Sometimes it's good to see people being passionate about their hobby, but some folks take it to a whole new level  .

Stupid AI and ridiculously accurate AI gunners

Posted (edited)

Getting up on the low six of a boogey with the faster plane. Climb up un him undetected then shoot and in a split second he realizes he has a six and starts to roll of to the left. Normally too late but - what the F*** - Both my wingcannons miss: left bullet passes him over his left wing and right bullet passes him right under his right wing. WHAAAAA:P

I had this countless times in Clod:P

The guys that say things after you turn and stall into the ground in dogfights. "Poor flying" , "LOLOLOL", "That was a stupid move". Once and a while I'll reply with a big fat no no and get booted but it's really worth it let me tell you.

Posted

My lack of skills makes me mad. Someday I will learn to control the rudder so that my plane won't swing 10 degrees to either side when I try to gently use the twist stick.

That is almost like someone asking how do you remove the chauks, and someone would answer ctrl+E that always brought a big smirk!

People entering a server, then demanding their favorite plane, even if it does not fit the time period, or location.

It used to happen all the time in IL2 when I would host BltizPig missions.

And they always were FW 190 guys, always.
