Heliopause Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Last December the new military museum opened at the former airfield of Soesterberg (Holland). I made a number of pics during a recent visit. Here is an impression. 2
79_vRAF_Friendly_flyer Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Cool! Is the Buffalo a glass-fibre replica?
sallee Posted January 10, 2015 Posted January 10, 2015 Looks great...and the idea of a new museum opening is pretty mindblowing these days!
6./ZG26_5tuka Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 NIce museum! Do you know sth about the Do 24 in the third picture? It's paintsheme looks pretty strange and it wears German Federal Republic markings on the tail section Just curious if that's sth historical or made up.
Uufflakke Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 Cool! Is the Buffalo a glass-fibre replica? The Brewster Buffalo is a replica indeed.Glass-fibre I don't know. The replica is built by technicians of the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Long Island, New York. I certainly gonna visit the newly built museum. The point is that it is such a succes you need to wait a long time to get it. Literally it means: one person out, one person in. In 2 weeks time more than 50.000 visitors. So better wait untill everything is back to normal before paying a visit.

The Dornier-24 was actually designed for the Dutch Navy to be used in the East Indies in the thirties. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dornier_Do_24 A couple of years later German Navy made use of these planes too. By the way, just happened to see this virtual tour in the museum: https://www.nmm.nl/ontdek/in-het-museum/
Heliopause Posted January 11, 2015 Author Posted January 11, 2015 The Brewster is not fiber glass as far as I know. In the Cradle museum some volunteers worked on it who had build originals back in the early '40s! It has an original engine. But it was not build to fly. The Fokker D7 has "BMW F" on the fuselage. Apparently it's 90% original. So could be an real "F". The Do 24 is an old Spanisch example that was last used in the SAR role in the '60's. On long term loan it now represents a Dutch East Indies (Indonesia) example. These where used to attack the advancing Japanese in late '41 early '42!

It rather looks like black red gold in this picture though so I was kind of curious
Heliopause Posted January 11, 2015 Author Posted January 11, 2015 Uuflakke, I think Saturday morning it is less busy in the museum :-) Or a weekday. It was really crowded during Christmas/holidays.

Then I will go on a Saturday morning as early as possible. Actually I live just about 20 miles from there. Thanks for showing the pictures.
Heliopause Posted January 11, 2015 Author Posted January 11, 2015 Another Do 24 pic for the enthusiasts
FlatSpinMan Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 That Dornier is just so striking! What an elegant plane. Looks like a great museum. Just a question - all the planes with roundels - are they representing Japanese aircraft or is it a variant of the Dutch insignia?
Heliopause Posted January 12, 2015 Author Posted January 12, 2015 The first Dutch roundel was orange (comes from / has a connection with the Dutch royal house). It was used around the period 1914-1921 I believe.
II./JG27_Rich Posted January 29, 2015 Posted January 29, 2015 (edited) Do-24! I'd love one of those in Cliffs of Dover. Edited January 29, 2015 by II./JG27_Rich
