Anyone running BoS on a 5K Retina iMac?

Years ago I bought a PC just to fly the original IL-2/Pacific Aces, and got quite addicted. Eventually the computer died and I stopped flying.

I just got a new 5K Retina iMac, and I intend to install Windows 8.1 so I can fly BoS, but that means buying a couple of exterior drives (a Windows boot drive, because I need the internal drive for other things, and a backup) in addition to the cost of BoS. That's a lot of money, and I was wondering if anyone else has flown on a Retina iMac.

I found a couple of older posts about it working well on a Mac Pro, but I was wondering about things like video driver compatibility (an AMD Radeon m295x w/4 gb), will TrackIR still work, performance under higher resolutions, etc.

If anyone has tried this yet I'd really like to hear how it's working for you.

Oh, and as a side note, will the original IL2 and Pacific Aces, work under Win 8.1? I really used to love flying the obstacle course!

Il2 still working on Windows 7. I see No reason why not on 8.

I have win 7 but have heard it works just fine with 8 stock or patched/modded up to HSFX,SAS or UP.

Win 8.1 has some annoying microsoft DRM which stops it from installing on a removable drive, so I found I could only install my bootcamp partition onto the internal HD. Apple's Bootcamp software handles repartitioning your HD and installing windows so it is fairly painless. You don't lose your current data, but have a backup just in case.

By all reports that works, and windows ignores the invisible flash partitions on apple "fusion drives" so you don't get HD acceleration under windows but retain it under OSX. I run a small partition on my main HD just for windows games. DO NOT use OSX disk utilities to resize your windows or OSX partition or windows will lose track of their info and not boot anymore. I use a program called "Camptune" to shuffle the size of the partitions if I need more space on either OSX or Win. Not optimal, but it works.

Evidently there are hacks to get Win 8.1 to install on a removable drive, but I haven't tried them.

Thanks for the replies, guys.

It's supposed to be easy, just a little work. People seem to have success by installing Windows on the internal drive using Bootcamp, then using Winclone to clone it to an external (which should be bootable now), then removing the Win partition from the internal. Edit: I think the external has to be Thunderbolt, though.

If that doesn't work, I'll keep the internal Windows partition just large enough to accommodate the OS and BoS, because that's the only Win program I want to run, but I'd like to make sure there aren't any compatibility problems with drivers or anything, and it's running OK on this machine. It's a lot of expense and effort just for one program, but if it works well it will be worth it. My hardware should be good enough to run it with all options turned up, and I bet it's spectacular!
