Please don't get my second post locked...

First post. I leave it on about page two this morning with some frank, though I thought healthy discussion. I come back after a day out, and I find it's locked. Man, that was a tinderbox.

Anyway, after having been given some suggestions on how to speed the game up a bit and get past the stutters and pauses, I thought I'd check it against IL2 COD, which I've not played for a long time - so long that since the last time, I've upgraded graphics card, ram (from 4g to 6), but also operating system, from Win 7 32bit to 64.

JEEPERS. It actually flys really well. Looks beautiful, I have to say, and no stutters or pauses. I was taken aback by the reflections - the white out of the sun on the cockpit interior, and, mercy, the condensation on the inside of the Blenhem after going through cloud. Utterly stunning. Even got kills.

That's all  (my last post was me saying I'd get back to you after trying it again).

I'm going in to try the various settings on IL2 BOS now to see how much difference the advice I was given makes.

Let you know.

All the best.

I don't think I saw your other thread, but I only play on a laptop, besides the low settings and no gamma/aa, I lowered my resolution down a few notches and checked full screen on and it helped drastically.

Genuinely not trying to be "that guy" Philx, but if you don't want your threads to turn in to a tender box starting a thread about Cliffs of Dover being a decent running title is not the place to start. I do agree with you 100% that it is not the devilish turd people make it out to be... But then again, somewhere behind the hokey aircraft performance (subjective, dead horse... I get it... Still doesn't make it right. ) this is likely a diamond in the rough just like Cliffs was pre-TF.

Anyway, it is unlikely you will be able to "self optimize" BOS as well as you can Cliffs, but there are a couple of helpful tricks if you're running an NVidea based system and I am not going to go check that other sunk ship to see if it was posted there...

Disable the in-game fullscreen option and run the game at your native resolution... Disable V-Sync in the game and use the frame limiter instead. You can then force a more functional, less costly V-Sync from the driver's control panel... Both of those tips I have found on the forums allowed me to get some better performance from my 770 and heavily overclocked i5 2500K.

The thing that really hurts BoS is too much moderation activity on this official forum, sry.

Sad thing is it becomes a source of jokes in other forum(s).

Which I am not happy at all with.

One has to be really careful what to write not to be locked/banned.

Some good posters gave up already (which is a shame).

The majority of the times I've been moderated I had it coming. The only heavy-handedness I ever experienced were from a certain gent from West Africa and another gent from France - both of which patrolled my posts every opportunity they got even though this was not their part of the community to moderate.

Since it seems to me you are singling him out, lets set the record straight (and this is coming from one of the most vocal critics of this game and these forums): Bearcat is a nice guy and is likely to be the most patient and objective moderator (you too, FSM) that you will find on these forums. If he performed any actions against you, don't take it personally because it is highly unlikely that he meant for it to be.

Let's not make Philx's thread in to another one of those threads. Offer him advice, wish him luck or move along.

I love Bear's Yak-1 NN skin.

Feel free to delete my post.

And, also, maybe it would be better for me to leave the forum and just enjoy the game (which i like).

Anyway, just tried BOS on low with antiailassing off and frame rate locked at 30, but most importantly, I think, cinematics turned off, and I have to say it's playable, I've not checked the frame rate, but either its a lot of little microstutters or just my eyes, but I'd say it was just under what I'd expect at 30. Can't see that much difference in graphics, really, so low it is and I'll keep up with it. It's a great looking sim (I recently tried the original IL2, which I got to run, surprisingly, and what I remembered as beautiful all those years ago was plain ugly. How far we've come).

As for COD, just posting my surprise that my rig could play it - whether it was the upgrades to my PC or the upgrades from the devs, or maybe both, but just surprised.

As to whether it makes me any friends, if I have to watch what I say to that extent (I didn't actually make any comment as to BOS in relation to COD), then, man, this place is not what I expected. Hopefully your warning is unjustified, as I assume other than a very few hot heads, this place is filled with like-mined souls who can discuss opinions without it turning into the last scene of Blazing saddles.

Edit - sorry, I forgot to thank those individuals who suggestested the changes to the settings, which have made the game pllayable for me.

All the best.

Sometimes you just need to consider the source and press on.. as far as being the subject of jokes.

Look this is not that forum..  as has been said more times than I can count, feel free to criticize, praise, discuss, suggest, vent .. to a degree ... as much as you want. Personal comments that either indirectly or directly suggest, insinuate or outright claim to know motives, or character of others on this board will not be allowed to remain unedited.. Or if a forum member complains about a post that is personally directed at them, as was the case in one of the posts in the OP's previous thread, that post will be addressed. Or if a member makes a post that is bound to incite all kinds of pointless negativity as in back and forth arguments as opposed to discussions those posts will be moderated. If you want a forum that is un moderated this is not that place.. If you want a forum that is moderated in a wide open fashion where anything goes.. this is not that place. Not as long as I am moderating here. I have done my best to be fair and objective as is evidenced by the very thread that the OP is referring to. Posts on all sides of the spectrum were edited. With PMs to go along with them.

To the OP..  and anyone else reading this.. The very first step in ensuring that a thread either goes south or doesn't .. is the title.. So if you want a thread to stay open and un moderated start there and do your best to make sure that every post thereafter that you make, because all you can be responsible for is yourself..  make sure that those posts are more liable to foster further discussion, even if on diametrically opposing views, rather than confrontation.. and threads will remain open, posts will remain un edited.

Try setting the FPS limiter to 60. Make sure Vsynch is off... My rig is two years old and it runs better in high than in Ultra. Also check to see what the settings on your card are in the manufatcurers SW.

Falke, I generally find your posts incredibly negative and occasionally insufferable but I am hugely impressed with this post. Takes a man to say such things. I'll try to be a little more open minded when reading your posts in the future. Salud.

The only thing i can offer is "chose your thread title carefully"

a thread title that is personal "treat me as an adult"

or makes reference to another thread that went  south "do not get my post locked"

is from experience (experience comes from mistakes...) not the way to Talk.

You got something to rant about? Stay level-headed as much as you can.

You want advice on how to improve a situation or solve a precise problem? be precise and objective.

I for one come here with one sentence in mind: "let being helpful be more important than being right" - and that last thread...

had nothing in the first couple of posts that could have turned into a helpful, useful thread for anyone.

and when Things go south, even krass objectivity can come across like nasty garbage - a vicious Cicle.

So chose your thread Title carefully, and figure out what you want, what the goal of the tread is.

With Both, we can all share and learn.

Without either proper intro or direction, we are wasting time.

The title should read

" Love Peace in War" ;)

Seriously though, there's a lot of drama in here, both sides. I think there needs to be more communication with the head honchos in here. When there's no comment from the ones in charge, everyone speculates, guesses and that's when people take sides and things get ugly. A simply reply from someone who can answer with authority would be refreshing and stop the guessing from the Monday morning armchair quarterbacks.

I agree and I can say with a level of surety that that is half the problem.

It isn't a fair expectation that English users be required to translate an entirely different forum if they want to know anything about where things are going...

Not OT because I'm not sure what the topic is: Can we just lock this one already..? Do any of us really need to turn it in to a Spiderman thread to get it there?

We've said our parts and I am glad OP is enjoying Cliffs and will hopefully get his copy of BOS playable.

Getting back to game performance, fps, etc...  FalkeEins, you have an I5 and are having issues making the game run smoothly?

I ask because I am in the preliminary stages of specifying an upgrade with my local shop.  (I'm done building my own).  I was thinking that an I5 would be OK, but now you have me thinking that this thing needs an I7.

Also I don't understand why you would use a frame rate limiter.  Isn't the whole idea to get as many FPS as possible?  I have never run any game with V-sync on because I never want to limit my frame rates.

Currently I am running a very out of spec Core 2 Duo machine that really is bottlenecking my outstanding 980 GTX.  I knew that when I upgraded to that card, but it made huge differences in all the other games and simulations I run.

I thought an I5 would/should be plenty of CPU?

I have no problem at all to run this game in ultra with my I5 3570K and a 780 GTX  ;)

An i5 like my 2500K works great. Only difference between i5 and i7 is hyperthreading and I don't know that BOS can support HT. ^_^

To answer the FPS bit - my monitor runs at 60Hz so I lock the game's FPS to 60 to prevent screen tearing.

Posted

That's what I do too. Locking at 60fps makes things smoother as anything above that is wasted by the limitations of the monitor.

My I5 works very nicely too btw. Much better than the Q6600 that preceded it.

Posted

I think my issue is not my I5 3.3 and 2gb 6970 vc as I've stated in other threads, I get down to 30 fps on dcs. My challenge is that I'm temporarily running on my 50" plasma through hdmi. It's a pioneer (HD in box seperate from TV, bought in 06)and I've researched where it says it's a 60 refresh rate. Problem is when I go to set my resolution it will only give me 30 refresh and 1024/720 instead of 1080? I usually run three monitors but right now most of our household stuff is in storage for the next 3-6 months.

Anyone have any idea or run on an HD TV?

Thanks

My undertanding is that a frame rate limit means that the limit prevents the slower frame rates looking worse compared to higher peaks. e.g. If it was peaking at 90 (without the limit) then dropped to 55 you would perhaps notice this as a loss of 'smoothness', but by being limited at 60, it would just be a drop of 5 so not noticeable?

-snip-

In some cases you can gain stability for lower end computers by limiting the frames... But in this case that is not the reason I am doing it.

A lot of the time, if you run 120FPS on a 60Hz panel you will be subject to a some graphical problems in the form of screen tearing...

That explains it better than I can.  :good:

That sounds like a setting in your driver is set wrong.

I am an Nvidia guy so my knowledge on AMD/Radeon chips is fairly limited to some minor tinkering at work... But I imagine if you dig around Catalyst Control Panel you will be able to find a fix for that.

Ya, I've been through that Catalyst control panel it seems like a hundred times. I've had a few friends hook in to my pc but no luck :(

I use to use nvidia but my racing sims liked ATI cards better. Oh well, thanks though
