La-5, Pilot Francisco Merono Pellicer, Tactical No. Unknown, 960th IAP "Alexander Chekalin", 1943 - nothing to write home about just a simple skin

I love it.  Fantastic looking skin!

Very Nice skin, thank you.

But nothing to write home about simple skins are ideal because that's what they really flew. The aces' planes are great, too, of course, but the everyman birds have an important part to play.

Yeah most of the time I actually prefer the more simple skins. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of awesome paint schemes with graphics and things, I just like to look like the "average Ivan" pilot from whatever unit. In my Il-2 DBW install, I usually use non-marked skins and the default game markings. I tend to shy away from over-the-top "Red Baron" type paint jobs.

Very nice, however I thought it was from the 960 IAP, the spanish regiment, and flown by pilot Francisco Meroño and his comrades.

Thanks for your work, this was in my "to-do" list.

Why are all this Soviet skins so dirty?!

Because the white paint used to do the winter schemes was a washable paint that could be easily removed again for the summer. So it was probably easier to get rubbed and chipped off.

In addition to what Possumkiller wrote, all the little bits of ice and snow left on the engine housing would melt when the engine was warming up, and the water would wash away the paint. Unlike the proper German or Russian regulation aeroplane paint, the white wash was porous (in order to be as mat as possible), making all kind of dirt stick to it. If you tried to was off all the dirt, the white paint would come off too.

Oh the name is the name of the unit. They named it in honor of him. I'm not to keen on Russian units yet. The guy said it was the 960th Fighter Regiment is all.

Is this true even for the normal camo?!   The green or grey ones?!   I did write "all" not only the white ones!  I did this remark already in the original skins so do not feel criticized but planes should be clean to fly correctly. :salute:

"should" is the key word.
maybe the mechanics had no time to clean them up... sometimes under arty fire, sometimes hungry and weak - or drunk...
I have never seen war nor have i been in the army - but there must be a BIG gap between "how to follow official guidelines for material use and maintenance" and "just make it fly!"

To some degree it is, but the white winter camo is meant to be washable with water. I used that stuff in the army. Come spring time, a water hose and a brush would take it off. Any polishing and scrubbing will weaken the paint and make it chip, even the aerolacks, but much, much slower. As a rule of thumb, the more glossy paints are the more resistant.

Thanks, Iceman, the La-5 is indeed a bit neglected for historical Russian skins.

Hi Iceman,

are you kidding me? (another beautifull skin)

Respect, very nice. Keep up your great work.

So it is Iceman. Went again to look at the unlocks the Kostylev skin x2 is a high point also. Interesting the Osprey title Russian Aces of World War 2 features the kostylev skin and a Ivan Kohzedub (62 victories) white 75 from 1943/4. I was unaware that Kohzedub also flew the "normal" La 5.

*This paint sheme is from a captured Lagg-3. Therefore it's designated "fictional" although the paint sheme is historical.
