Gentleman,

After that nice skin of Jade, I bring a pack of historical IL2's, believed to be of 606th ShAP, 214th ShAD. Here is some info about the aircrafts:

-The Number 7 has a dotted tail boom and color scheme probably from Factory No.18. Massimo's profile only shown the left side and I made a guess based on other profiles to complete that one.

-Number 21 and Number 3 had almost an identical camo scheme; the only difference is in the tail boom black/green camo that is slightly longer in the No.3.

The remain info is directly extracted from Massimo's page:

"...The plane blue (or yellow?) 3 was flown by Pilot A.V. Chuvikov, of 606th ShAP, 214 ShAD.

The slogan says 'Za Otradnova', that means 'For Otradnov'.

Otradnov and Chuvikov both were pilots of this unit, both KIA (autumn 42 and spring 43 respectively).

...

The tail shows the typical camo pattern of Zavod 30. Consequently, the wings have to be wooden.

The stiffeners on the fuselage are clearly visible.

Note the oblique white band of the tail that characterized many planes of this regiment.

The color of the fuselage has a not uniform look, it is unclear if this was maculated with another camo color (as 'red 8' apparently of the same unit) or simply worn..."

...

"...The white band and other resemblances to known photos suggest that the plane could belong to 606 ShAP of 214 ShAD..."

"...Reconstruction of red underlined 21, of which only images of wrecks are known. From what can be seen of the camouflage, it looks a plane built in Z.30 with wooden wings..."

All the credits to Massimo Tessitori, as always.

PS: This pack features the missing layer in the earlier IL2M42 template, thus the 37mm has the proper hole for ejecting cartridges and some other missing shadows are present. The pack is compressed with 7.z to save more space.

IL-2 1942

I saw the pics and story of this bird and thought it needed to be brought back to life. Damn those vulchers!

It's a plain Jane but not everyone got to fly a work of art.

Story:

A plane destroyed on the ground near Vyazma-Gradina.

The camo scheme is a typical variant of Zavod 18, including the outlined stars, well visible on wing undersurfaces too.

Although the barrels and fairings are not visible, the shape of ammo hatches shows that this wing is the model of 1942.

Nice work on the finish and replicating the camo pattern, it looks spot on.

How do you get that matte finish?

Just making the alpha channel darker doesnt do the trick like some guides claim. Any clues?

Could someone share a file with all the layers to understand how it's done?

Thanks Lucas.  I find the more I skin, the longer each project takes, as I try to be that much more precise.

I followed the instructions in the post link below (using GIMP) except that I brought the curve on the right side down to the third block, the rest of the curve looked about the same.  It was the only alpha layer adjustment I made.

http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/15420-custom-alpha-channel-tutorial-gimp-advanced-skinners/?p=301806

I know from personal experience they don't like to muck up the aircraft specific skin threads with a lot of skinning instructions but I would be glad to answer any questions you may still have in the link provided above.

Cheers!

Here's my flying Tiger Shark. I think we, low-flying-heavy-hitting, IL-2's needed something cool to add to our repertoire. I also wanted to be easily identifiable by Allies (and Axis too), hence the red portions. Enjoy!

 Any comments welcommen.(bad skins?worst skins in the il history??borring skins?,...cool skins?  super skins?(lol)....) :(

I think you do an excellent job, very talented.

My only recommendation would be to concentrate a little more on historical skins, but either way I enjoy the new skins you make.

i think the numbers look much too "modern standard", and this breaks the Paintjob a little.
how about hand drawn numbers, or come customaisation?
(convert numbers layer to raster layer, and customize...)

Some color lines are hard, some are faded, it is a weird mix sometimes.
don't just change the colors... adapt the scheme too!

Ahistorical, but beautiful!

Jason

Ahistorical? That is laughable in regards to many many in this community. How many craft are presented for the Germans that do NOT display the swastika? I, for one, won't even download a skin without it and no, I am NOT a Nazi sympathizer.

Excuse me, but I was just remarking on the fact that the skin was not historically accurate. What does that have to do with the swastika? The swastika is sometimes not represented because it is illegal in some countries. I was talking solely about the Il-2. I've written a book on the Il-2, and in my research I've seen many inaccurate representations of Il-2 schemes that have been passed off as historically accurate in books and web sites. I was merely pointing out that this was a nice colour scheme, but not an historical one. If you find that laughable, please laugh until you pass out.

Best Regards,

Jason
