Hi all,

IL2 White 24 from 566th ShAP, 1993. The following information can be found on Sovietwarplanes.com.

"...Plane white 24 of 566th ShAP in 1943.

The plane is only partially visible on the photos, but the typical markings of this unit are known from other images.

The closer plane is armed with 20 mm ShVAK guns, but plane 24 shows the long barrel of VYa-23.

Noteworthy are the small red stars on the nacelles of 24, with a white outline and green background and painted a bit downwards..."

Nice one Tatarenko.  Is it historical or historically-inspired?

Posted

Although it is a very nice scheme, and certainly suitable for what is after all a game, the Southern Front camouflage did not exist historically, certainly not for Il-2's. All Il-2's at the Battle of Stalingrad were painted in green and black over blue camouflage, with temporary white winter paint applied over this when there was snow on the ground. Green and brown, or dark green and green camouflages also were not used.

Hello gentleman,

The following information can be found on Sovietwarplanes.com:

"...Four screenshots of the takeoff of an Il-2M flown by Vasilin Ivan, the regimental commander of 617th ShAP. The plane is entitled to Suvorov, the great Russian strategist of the 19th century. The plane is clearly a straight-winger with short radio mast and the post-August camouflage and markings. The images are probably of the late summer/fall of 1943.

On the background, we see a later model with the higher radio mast (800 mm instead of 350) introduced into production around September or October 1943.

The fingernail shape of the fairing of the tail wheel is noteworty; after the summer 1943, it became characteristic of the planes built in Zavod 1. The most part of the planes visible in a video of this unit look of Z.1 also because of the very large stars.

The colors of the cap on the tail and of the spinner are reported by veterans:

  • orange tail cap (and, probably, rear part of the spinner) as standard for 617th ShAP;
  • 1st Squadron - red spinner tip
  • 2nd squadron- white (?) spinner tip
  • 3rd Squadron - yellow spinner tip.

Note the light brown repainting at the base of the stabilizer, common to many planes of the unit; they could be due to the deletion of a previous marking.

Lacking of bort numbers, it is likely that the inscription was painted on both sides to make the commander's plane more recognizable.

Thanks to Aleksandr Ruchkovsky and Vitaliy Timoshenko for the informations..."

All the credits to Massimo Tessitori and his amazing work. The attached pictures and original Massimo's drawing are for reference only. Not copy rate abuse intended.

I tonned up slightly the light brown to match better the new seasonal maps. I will use now on this brown as standard for the upcoming aircrafts. Remember that the appropriate/real color is something difficult to achieve and different sources contradict each other in different ways. Anyways my point is to have aircrafts that match their original counterparts in the game and if this require adjusting the colors I will do it.

Hi all,

This was going to be uploaded yesterday but luckily I saw a mistake on the trim tabs but was too late for correction. Now is fixed. The following information can be found on Sovietwarplanes.com:

"...A plane of 431 ShAP (later 174 GvShAP) of 299 ShAD (later 11 Gv ShAD) probably in Poland or Belarus in 1944. (Thanks to AR)

The tail wheel fairing of long type seems to identifies it as a plane built in Z.1 in late 1943, with wooden wings, tall mast, flushed rocket rails, pitot probe close to the tip. Note the removal of the rear section of the canopy. The straight shape of the wing can be confirmed by observing the alignment of the flap and aileron.

The camouflage of the nose seems the 2nd variant proposed by the NKAP istructions of August 1943, but the rear fuselage and tail don't seem to confirm this; perhaps the plane was subject to some repainting.

Noteworty are the white rudder, red trim, the white band around the fuselage apparently contoured by thin red lines.

Red 52 is of the same unit of red 44 and is extremely similar, apart for the camo pattern...."

A similar aircraft can be found on Jason Nicholas Moore's excellent book IL-2 Shturmovik: Red Avenger on page No.88, this time with the bort number 48.

Hello everyone! I'm nearly done making my first skin, but I have one question. How does everyone make theirs so small? Even when I compact all the layers, the game gives me a warning saying the skin is too large

Here is it:

Nice one, looks a bit unfinished though.

You  have to compress your skin to make it match the filesize limits of the game. Usual compression method is DXT5 (allows you to use alpha channel for reflectuions). You can also make skins in 4k if you export them with DTX1 (without alpha channel).

Happy new year folks,

That's my last try in the IL2 family. An IL2KR, an artillery spotter aircraft. I added a custom layer with a camera mounted on the right side of the fuselage, pointing down. Only the lens is visible(of course) and that's the best I can do for now. This is the story from Massimo's place:

"...The Il-2KR (korrektirovschchik) was developed as an artillery spotter/reconnaissance aircraft. Its prototype was developed from the series two-seater powered by the AM-38F.
Changes were confined to the equipment:

  • the RSI-4 radio was replaced by the more powerful RSI-3bis, installed over a lowered fuel tank behind the gunner/observer position;
  • an AFA-1 or AFA-1M camera was installed in the rear fuselage, over a circular window in the lower/right part behind the wing fillet;
  • the radio mast was moved over the windshield;
  • the armour was extended under the observer's position..."

"...Il-2KR n°714 (serial n°7319) was built in zavod 1 in 1943.
The camouflage looks exactly reversed (ie, green and black are exchanged) of the previous plane blue 5 an of standard Il-2Ms built in factory n.1.
Note the green background of both bort numbers, probably a repainting to delete previous ones, and the sharp demarcation lines.
It seems to have repairs of the fabric skinning on both wings; this characteristic was ignored in the drawing below.
The red stars look to have been repainted with white/red outlines after August 1943..."

You can find a color profile of this aircraft(author: Massimo Tessitori) on Jason Nicholas Moore excellent book: IL-2 SHTURMOVIK: RED AVENGER profile 57.
All the credits to these guys.

A lot of these skins when loading the IL-2 1942 with the 37mm there is no cartridge slot or opening to allow the spent cartridge to fall through. the only correct skin with this feature is the default official skins.

I have fixed the issue with the 37mm. There was a layer missing. I'll upload it later tonight.

Hi guys,

I updated the IL2 Kr. No.714 with the missing layer that was affecting all the skins. There were missing some shadows and the 37mm ejector cartridge slot reported by Mastif. Here are some pics. The link is the same as posted above.

I will corrected all the other skins to the new basis.

I've been spending so much time in the MiG-3 lately I've been neglecting the Il-2. I need to get back in and do some ground missions in it. I love this ugly bird as well. I'm happy you give her attention Peter.

Love the 23 @Jade ;) , and remember to change the color of the Pitot tube as the basic template is wrong there. Also there are some minor oversprays here and there and as I can see you still have the older template with no shadows and ejecting cartridge slot holes on the 37mm(as almost all my skins but No.714). You'll need to download the new one and copy/paste the missing layer on the advanced tab.

So far one of the most lovelys non historical skins imho. Love the color palette and diferent greys.

Thanks for the feedback!

@Peterla Yes, I started it a long time ago and it was parked for a while, so it has the old template. I'll add the missing layer and correct it.

What is the pilot tube exactly? any pointers on how to fix it?

@Jade,

Take a look on the attached pic. I highlighted what I saw. So far the rest is good and is not your fault. The IL2 template is a little messy and you need to play around. The issue is in the default grey camo layer that for whatever reason is not properly aligned in some parts(underwing surface, tail boom and lower nose).

Keep them coming!. Looking forward to the final version.

S!
