PC Pilot magazine - BoS review in current issue

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

For anyone who is interested, issue 95 of PC Pilot magazine has part 2 of its BoS review - it's effectively a full review as part 1 was a pre-release preview, apparently.

The hardcopy version is in UK newsagents now. Just had a quick look through. It seems like a relatively detailed review and while acknowledging the controversies, the reviewer is generally enthusiastic and gives quite a high overall score. If I'm reading it right, it's rated 90, out of 100 I think.

I read part 1 last month. Derek Davis has been writing for PC pilot for a long time. He knows his stuff quite well.

Well, as they say in Belfast about the RMS Titanic - it was all right, when it left here...

I want to buy that issue on http://www.pcpilot.net/

However it is not explicit if it comes in pdf (I don't want a paper copy).

Have anybody bought in pdf format on their website?

PCPilot issue 94 and 95 with Part I and Part II of the BOS review are available as .pdf on the net.

It did not take me that long to find them and to d/l them both.

Read your PM. ;)

Did you get them from the site? I didn't see a link to do. I read the first interview while doing some shopping in Microcenter.

No, not from PCPilot.net.

Got both from a download site.

I got a subscription so I could read it :-)

Figured I would find the magazine interesting anyways. It's a good review. They give it a 90

Also the reviewer likes the unlocks!

Nice to hear it gets a good review! Hopefully it'll bring many new pilots to our servers. :)

There's a sidebar entitled "Unlocks" which concludes:

"this writer does not see unlocks as being a negative inclusion. In fact, I like the fact that you are rewarded for your efforts, which gives you a constant sense of achievement."

Why cant you people realize that actually there are some people that enjoy the unlocks ? Everyone have an opinion.

I dont hate it, but the unlocks made me fly the Stuka, IL2 and Pe2 otherwise I wouldnt touch, and WOW, I actually enjoyed flying those planes.

Why can't you realize that many of us feel robbed blind?

If unlocks are for you, maybe warthunder is up your alley?

I find this sim to be good, and the fact it is a WW" flight sim make me forgive pretty much. It is realistically the last we will ever see if not a miracle make the world population to like simulators.

The unlock thing is a one time deal, when they are done they are done, I do not like the idea either, but missing out on this sim is to me a high price.

And the fact that some leave the sim because of it, tells me they does not have anything positive to contribute anyway. None cares if they choose to punish the developers by not using it.

I can see why this author are enthusiastic about the sim, the fact that he like the unlocks tells me he might not have too much time spent in any flight simulator.

He might be a vivid race sim jockey, unlocks are common in that genre, It is without a doubt a huge mistake putting unlocks on a IL2 brand, the community are obligated to resist against it, and I am among those who do.

But as I said once they done they are done, and I done the planes I like. After that it is only the arcadish damage model I have a problem with, witch by the way was fixed pretty much on 1008 patch, now the planes does not catch fire that easy, way to go dev´s, you do listen to the customers after all

Since the reviewer writes for a magazine called "PC Pilot" I'm going to go ahead and guess he has played other flight some before. He mentions that some older flight sims like Red Baron had point and rewards systems in them as well.

Derek Davis has been writing for PC Pilot for at least 11 years. He has done write ups on pretty much every sim that has come out in the past decade or so and their add ons. I think from what I know of him he is just being objective and open minded. He has to write a review on the product and be mind full of not injecting his preferences into it looking at it from a warts and all perspective while trying to write for someone who may have no idea of the hardcore sim community... or it's passions'

Ok but he do not have any insight in the IL 2 brand, I take it.

I really never seen the unlocks as a big obstacle, do them and they are done. But the very idea brings my thought´s to teenage punks sitting in their boys room. And the fact is average age on flightsims are well over 40 years. I am happy for every teenager we can get interested in this genre, but we are a majority of old grumpy men.

Again I have no longer any problems with it, but I understand the reaction it got.

That said, in my mind you aint that hungry for a new combat sim if that feature alone make you quit flying it. The fact that 50% of COD community make a banana forum stand against it only helps when it come to those migrating from Old IL2. I can report many mates from that community are coming over.

They are well aware of the unlocks and not happy with it, but they come knowing that is something they have to deal with.

These are people I tried to get to fly cod, but thy simply would not

See, that's the kind of comments we really don't need:

The first line is perfectly legitimate: people are unhappy to have to play SP to have to unlock stuff for MP. Totally reasonable comment, though personally I feel they're easily obtained and hardly worth the drama, but I can understand why MP-only players are unhappy with it.

But the second line is the drama I'm talking about. There are plenty, _plenty_ of people who are fine with the unlocks, and insinuating that they aren't true simulator fans is needlessly inflammatory (because we all know WT is viewed with derision, and "WT is up your alley" is clearly an derogatory). Seriously, where is the need to insult people who like unlocks?

I like winning and achieving things in games and even especially in flight sims. So the unlocks for me are good fun. I comsider myself a "hardcore" player too. If there's a challenge or an achievement I can get in a flight sim I'm all up for it. A personal favorite I wanted was the 37mm tank buster cannons for the Stuka since I built a model of Rudel's plane ages ago. Just won them today! :-D

Nice mate! When I started flying the stuka the 37mm cannons was my goal too.

Anyways about the unlocks: its the way the devs did it, and its not gonna change, you either do it, or you dont dont. I'm kinda of guy who makes it with what I have, besides, you only have to unlock them once. But not playing the game because of it ? I'm not gonna miss the chance to play this awesome flight sim because of a minor thing, and I find the mp completely playable without the unlocks.

That's the abusive attitude (Edited) which makes this forum unique.

What was announced (IL2 series successor) was not quite what was delivered, and it seems it never will be, imo.

Consider the fact that since the mod staff here are all volunteers.. with lives.. we do not always see things in real time at the moment they happen.

Sorry you couldn't be more wrong. Derek has written thousands of words about the original IL2 and Cliffs of Dover with extensive and detailed articles on the individual aircraft in Cliffs. This involved the startup, take-off, flying, combat, bombing and landing in great depth for each of CloD's aircraft. He also did an in-depth air combat series using IL2 and Cliffs, so he is very well read and knowledgeable about the IL2 series, he is a veteran reviewer and simmer.

Cheers, MP

You mentioned your opinion some time ago already. It is accepted on this forum to express this feeling. But can you explain the reason of repeating the ever same statement a hundred times ?

I have been robbed a hundred times, cause I did buy bad nonplayable games. CloD was one of that robberies. But I just leave it behind me and move on. Why should I spend precious lifetime staying on a forum of a game, which I don´t like ?

I would need to spam a hundred forums by now

I don't know -  that's abusive?

Sorry, but 'disagree, strongly'. Compared to what's often seen on another site's BoS forums, the comment is mild indeed - a pointed and brusque reaction to an equally pointed and brusque comment; both stopped short of being downright rude or abusive.

As for the implication that this forum approves 'abusive' behaviour, my impression now that I've been here for a while and seen it for myself, is exactly the reverse. IMHO, what's happening here has frequently been misinterpreted (or misrepresented by those with an axe to grind) as 'criticism being suppressed'. Again IMHO, it's generally no such thing. People are attracting moderator attention when they cross a different line, into bad behaviour. Happened to me here once and I've learned my lesson, rather than going and 'crying foul' over at 'that other site' as some have done.

So, we're gonna have to agree to differ, on that.
