JST Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 (edited) Has anyone been able to load higher resolution textures into the game/viewer? When I tried, anything beyond 2048x2048 was faced with a message saying the resource is too large and the game resizes the texture to 2048x2048. Is this an artificial limitation or a game engine issue? Either way, it's incredibly outdated and unacceptable. Edited December 23, 2014 by JST
Jaws2002 Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 (edited) That's the maximum resolution the game will take. If the model is good, it's not that bad. Edited December 25, 2014 by Jaws2002
FuriousMeow Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 Is this an artificial limitation or a game engine issue? Either way, it's incredibly outdated and unacceptable. If by out of date you mean still being employed by titles released this year, then you are absolutely right! 2048x2048 textures take a lot of memory, and how much video card memory do you have?
JST Posted December 25, 2014 Author Posted December 25, 2014 That's the maximum resolution the game will take. If the model is good, it's not that bad. I understand many can feel that way, although I'm not content with it. If by out of date you mean still being employed by titles released this year, then you are absolutely right! 2048x2048 textures take a lot of memory, and how much video card memory do you have? And other games employ larger resolutions! What is your point? Of course it is outdated if the engine cannot even handle larger textures. I thought this is the reason we have graphical settings options? It's easier to scale down than up. I have a 2GB card, with BoS using 1GB with the LoD texture ini. mod, although I don't quite understand the point of this question, since we're talking about modded custom files. Even generally, a single object with a 4096x4096 texture isn't going to kill performance for anyone. Any devs to weigh in on this?
Yakdriver Posted December 25, 2014 Posted December 25, 2014 512 and 256 colors is what this has started out with. content with what i got - need to be up close, nose on the chrome to see the detail. 4k would be good to have though - for the twins and four engine pieces to come...
=38=Tatarenko Posted December 26, 2014 Posted December 26, 2014 I started with 16 colours. Really. Heroes of the 357 and F-16. It was a REVELATION when 256 colours came out with F-117!

I am not a developer and I do not know if in the future they plan to change the skin sizes.. but I do know that they have more important things to finish working on. I will leave this thread open so that a developer can perhaps chime in ..
JST Posted December 28, 2014 Author Posted December 28, 2014 The sim uses skins that are 2048x2048. Why would you expect larger ones to work? Because we're almost living in 2015 and 2048 only results in blurry junk.
6./ZG26_5tuka Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 (edited) You can make skins with 4k using DXT1 conversion...it would be totally matt without any shine map though. As long as your skins dont grow larger than 8MB you can do pretty much everything you like. Edited January 7, 2015 by Stab/JG26_5tuka
