He he, close call there Klunk... For us in Sweden the J-20 was "easy" ;)

You are fast - but unfortunately no points this time... And I agree that it's a bit evil with wrecks... But I guess Frey will take it anyway? :)

Hmm, first one looks like a weird Il-2....

Second one: Fokker T.V.

Third one... Huh?

Well - will give some hints of the last one as even you sound confused about it...

Another image of aircraft 3 above (the wreck in the desert):

Not allowed to edit the original post so I can't change that post to include this image...

And yes - it's a Fokker T.V (ugly looking bugger that one ;))

And some advice regarding no 1...

I'd say that the canopy section is "typical" for fighters from that country though they are usually further back. And look at the engine... Looks familiar?

...and elliptical wings (nice aerodynamic properties but hard to manufacture) are also not uncommon from this country...

...and yes - it's a prototype :)

juging by the tail section and cocpit on no 1 is Italian for sure, maybe fiat or caproni but didnt saw this type yet

Posted

Mmm... Sounds like good reasoning but which one? ;)

And regarding the third one - it was for sure designed with colder climate in mind and I guess the designers where a bit surprised that it ended it's career in the desert ;)

The air force in that country got some press not so many years ago after a woman got the first confirmed kill in a famous modern fighter... And it's an interesting story that proves that many of our sterotype images of what women are "allowed to do" in countries in that region are maybe not that true?

picture 3 has to be T-6, look at that bar on crashed one its roll bar in T-6 ?  :)

first im sure its italian

for bomber because of engines i guessed its Wellington, but i see Freycinet was correct, now just need to figuer out what exactly type is no 1 :)

1) This plane served in WWII, what is it?

01.jpg

2) This fellow became an ace flying US radial-engined fighters. Who is he?

ACe2.jpg

3) He shot down 20+ German planes and had an insignia showing a double-6-dot domino on his plane. Who was he?

Who is this? He was never found and it was probably friendly fire that sent him down. A high scorer too.

Well done! Tell us a bit about how you found out. Always interesting to hear about the techniques of other snoops... :-)

Good hunches!

Well done! I read a very interesting book about him. One of the very many high-scoring aces from Finland. Seems it was helpful to fly against the USSR if you wanted to amass a lot of victories in WWII...

Our pilots has much better pilot training and leaders than russians. Actually Finland has most fighter aces in world in relation to population. But to have as much victories as Hans Wind you really need to be natural talent too.

Heinz Schmidt, 173 victories. Probably shoot down by hungarian pilot. I'm currently reading Helmut Lipfert book (again, must be tenth or so time) :)

Thanks!

Well - I wish I would have gotten that question after Yaklovers question as I actually recognized both aircraft directly and just had to verify them on the net. And I knew that the BI-1 was the first rocket powered soviet aircraft and had read the story sometime earlier so I just had to look up the pilot name...

But - you quiz was unfortunately more about hard Google search work ;)

Finding the MB-81 actually took me most of my 40 minute train ride to work on a cellphone that was hot after it. The first thought after seeing a "square" monoplane with a fat straight cross was naturally that it must be some 20:ies Junkers... Looked up all Junkers I could find with no luck. Had a "Fokker feeling" to and when't down that path for 10 minutes... Checked some french 30:ies aircraft too with no luck. So then I took the hard route and as it looked like an ambulance aircraft I started different combinations on that theme. Finally the hard route with google images and taking the approach that it looked "late 20:ies - early 30:ies" I found it with the google images search "ambulance aircraft 1932" :)

And with José Maria I was a bit lucky as it was a very clever and sneaky ace to find :) I immediately had some feeling that I had seen a "stubby plane" like an early polish or soviet ac with domino or dice on the tail and had a feeling it must be east fron as there are not that many allied over 20. Looking at Soviet aces list I stumbled into the I-16 wikipedia page and tada - there it was on the tail of the Spanish rata in the top right corner :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polikarpov_I-16

It kind of feels like cheating of course with google images - but just randomly searching will get you nowhere, so the skill is how to narrow it down. And it's a lot of fun doing it as many side tracks can lead to interesting stories "while hunting"...

Well, even though Richie was not the current quiz master I think we can say it's your turn to ask the question anyway as I have done two here already... OK?

I hope this help someone. Medals and awards on the picture are from left to right:

DFC, ?, Legion d'honneur, Croix de Guerre avec palme and Czechoslovak Military Medal "For the Merit".

Because of the last one I think it could be František Fajtl, but because I have no idea about the second medal, I'm not sure.

 no 2 is maybe Morane-Saulnier 406

Correct for the medals you identified, wrong for the pilot. Maybe the non-identified medal will give the answer... ;)

2) Dewoitine D 520 ?

Correct
