WWII aviation related quiz

I don't know how many of you who still remember the old Quiz thread back in the good old days at UBI zoo , but why not start one here as well(?).

The rules are easy.

The first one who answers the three questions correctly, gets to ask the next three questions. If you e.g answer two questions correcly, it does not count, and other people may use your 2 correct answers in order to make it to three.

It is the person who asks the questions who decides who wins and is to ask the upcoming three questions.

So here are the 3 first challenges:

1. What is the pilot's name?

pic01.jpg

2. What type of airplane is depicted in the picture?

pic02.jpg

3. In 1944 this "all-ace" squadron was formed by a well-known Japanese military aviator and politician. What was this squadron's name?

PS. Be careful when you use pictures if  it's your turn to aks questions. The picture's name and adress can reveal the answer :) Better to download the pictures you want to use and upload it somewhere "neutral" :)

For question 1 I'd say the pilot is Barkhorn.

Question 2 looks a bit like a Typhoon. But the canopy is a bit weird.

Question 3 I don't know.

I remember that quiz very well. Participated in it for quite a while and became number 1 back in 2010 or so. :)

Wasn't it the case you started that funny quiz at Ubi and Dance took over the moderating of that thread?

What makes a quiz like this less challenging nowadays is that you can drag and drop posted images into the Google search bar and the image finder does the rest.

Unfortunately...

yeah.. he took it all over .for which I am grateful. we had a scorecard and everything :)

But it was an old idea which I took up... I think it was Lilbill or something who started it all

even so with pics.... its all for fun and we learn stuff... text questions can be trickyer.. or if you crop stuff from pics.. or make the picture.. weird in some way :)

EDIT: oh crap.. it is really powerful these days....IS NOTHING SACRED THESE DAYS!!! :D

Thanks for the info about Google image search. It's a beaut. Looking forward to learning more WW2 related stuff in this thread too. :-)

Ok...i'm not good at this so these may be way too easy for most of you...and please don't use that google drag'n drop in this game :)

Here we go...

Hehe... - now I have to take this one too!

1) Niels Bohr, in a DeHavilland Mosquito

2) SAAB 18

3) Pierre Clostermann

- Should be right... I'll be on it in a jiffy!

You are for sure the right worthy poster of the next question! :)

(And for the ones interested in the Bohr story I summarized it when I did an IL2 skin for that Mosquito):

1) A minor European power produced its own 20mm cannon which it installed experimentally in fighters bought from another somewhat minor European power. Which cannon?

2) Which WWII ace?

3) Which plane?

BTW, my image obfuscation measures will defeat even Google Images drag-and-drop...   :-)

The Ki-78 was a sweet looking machine. Never saw one before. Good questions too. Way out of my league and I won't resort to web searches for trivia answers either.

Answers two and three are correct, but no. 1  is not! (Except if you can find a scenario that fits my sentence!)

Well - the Oerlikon FF was installed in polish pzl P24:s... Fit's rather OK I thought... Will think (search more ;))

Posted

...But Switzerland didn't fly Pzl P24s... Hehe :-)

Ok, a bit more help: the fighter in question was a fixed-undercarriage monoplane in service at the beginning of WWII.

Posted

Hs.404 in French aircraft?

Depends what you term a minor power.

Hmm, starts thinking of if the Bofors 20mm was installed somewhere...

Hmm, the Finns tried the Oerlikon (?) in the Fokker D.XXI - still does not fit your question :)

It is not what you where thinking about - but the Bofors 20mm was installed in the Saab J-21 (but it was Swedish - darn)  :)

And I have to give up now as it's too late... Did we in Sweden maybe try to fit Bofors 20mm:s in our Fiat CR42:s? Cannot find any information about that...

EDIT - I'm tired now ;) You said monoplane, but fixed undercarriage is right at least... :)

Think it's the Fokker D XXI with the Madsen 20mm cannon.

Posted

I think Hood is right, really can't think of another cannon that fits that description. You've made up an excellent quiz Freycinet.

So looking at all posts is this correct? (guys rule is to give all 3 in one post, and plz give us just number of correct anwsers not which one is correct so its more interesting :) )

1, Fokker D XXI with the Madsen 20mm cannon

2. James Harry Lacey

3. Mitsubishi G3M

Posted (edited)

JtD is correct! Well done: it is the Danish Madsen machine gun that was experimentally installed in Dutch Fokker XXIs sold to Denmark.

From http://www.network54.com/Forum/394728/thread/1195948515/Fokker+D.XXI+part+1+%28Spain+and+Denmark

"After Finland, Denmark was the second foreign purchaser of the D.XXI and on the 8th of July 1937 a contract was signed for 2 Dutch built D.XXIs and the licence rights for another 10 aircraft to be built by Hoerens Flyvertroppernes Vaerksteder at Klovermarken (near Kopenhagen).
The two aircraft built by Fokker (J-41 enJ-42) arrived in Denmark on the 29th of April 1938 and were equipped with Mercury VIS engines, which probably were replaced later by Mercury VIII engines of 840 hp, the same that were fitted in the Danish built machines.

Only J-42 was experimentally equipped with 2 Madsen 20mm cannon, mounted in underwing gondolas. But the Danish were not very convinced by the results of the trials made in this configuration and in 1940 all Danish D.XXIs carried only their two engine mounted machine guns and provisions for some 100 kg bomb load as armament "

...I'm realising it was perhaps an overly esoteric question, sorry guys!

- Following the rules it is however Yaklover that does the next round for listing the three correct answers. Over to you Yaklover!
