Simicro Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Hi all, For me: The IL-2 has only elevator trim. The plane has a tendancy to drift in roll (regardless of the wind). To counter that drift and maintain a constant heading during cruise, you have to: 1) Apply rudder inputs continously 2) Correct with the ailerons once in a while Also, I did not notice a significant relationship between RPM and drift in roll. Please do correct me if I am wrong.
=69.GIAP=MYATA Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Which totally makes sense due to the torque effect.
Simicro Posted December 5, 2014 Author Posted December 5, 2014 Thank you guys. During cruise, I am curious about the most common pratice to counter the drift: 1) Apply rudder inputs continously OR 2) Correct with the ailerons once in a while Which one do you use most?
Yakdriver Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 I always give input on more than one axis, because of my flying habits. (I find flying straight and level impossible, so i fly in zigzags, canopy open to have a better view, constant check for 109's)
Simicro Posted December 5, 2014 Author Posted December 5, 2014 I see Yakdriver. And do you close your canopy before a ground attack ?
simplyjames Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Simicro, I usually do the same thing but when heading in for a ground attack i close it. I suppose its preference. I notice when leaving it open I often times am hit by ground fire.
=38=Tatarenko Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 The manual (for the real IL-2) also says to close the armoured radiator shutters before attacking but I normally forget in the game. As for the canopy, I'm torn. I like to look behind for messers and to see the bomb strikes (and to reduce bailout times if needed!!) but it does protect you for sure.
Simicro Posted December 5, 2014 Author Posted December 5, 2014 Yeah sometimes I forget to close the canopy for attack too. And I read that in real life closing the radiators is to avoid explosion wrecks. In the game I don't close the radiators because I'm afraid of forgetting to open them again after the attack, in order to avoid a engine failure. Back to the initial topic, I would be grateful if I had a few more testimonials on this: Thank you guys. During cruise, I am curious about the most common pratice to counter the drift: 1) Apply rudder inputs continously OR 2) Correct with the ailerons once in a while Which one do you use most?
Yakdriver Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 I see Yakdriver. And do you close your canopy before a ground attack ? No... that would be optimal, but i admit i keep it open - there is too much metal, not enough Plexi glass. The only places where i close the Canopy is when i need to go... "fast", that means when i am surely out of danger and sure that i am on the right path - and can take the risk of flying in a straight line.
