Not unless the resolution of the VR devices increases significantly. There have been previous statements that the existing level of detail doesn't allow a pilot to see an enemy aircraft at any distance.

You also need a Note 4, if you don't already have that. And the last thing i read about that, was that it can get pretty hot. I would wait for the consumer variant of the Rift instead.

hey guys, as the resident Oculus owner thought I might just jump in and clear up a couple of misconceptions here.

Is it worth asking Santa for one now? I play primarily CloD, RoF,and of course BoS...

Anyone?

Nope. You will not ever play flight sims like those mentioned on the Samsung Gear VR. It slots a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 in the front and is good for the kind of games that will run on a phone, and of course media, which excludes anything but the most basic of sim experiences - for now. If you want to start messing around with sims you need the DK2 - http://www.oculus.com/dk2/

This is true. It really depends what you want the oculus for. If you want to be competitive in multiplayer, wait for the release of the CV (Commercial Version) 1 next year with the upgraded screen. Currently you cannot pick out dots that would be visible on a screen and losing aircraft in ground clutter is also a worry. If you cant wait, want to feel like youre actually flying something solid in three dimensions, an incredible sense of immersion for me personally, rather than watching yourself flying through a little 23" window in front of you, then its worth consideration. I would recommend trying one first if possible.

Currently its really good for sim racing because of the static seat and watching media is great fun (with the proviso that youre essentially watching in VHS quality), but flight sims have yet to catch up. DCS works for me, as an AMD user, only using a workaround and makes it feel like im sitting really close to the front panel. On the bright side I can read all the gauges, on the downside id get bounced to hell and back in a competitive scenario. IL2 BOS has yet to introduce a workable Oculus Rift version, thats coming in November. Its December you say? My my. War Thunder suffers also from the perspective thing so currently there is yet to be a comfortable 'sitting in a cockpit sensibly' experience - I cant speak for Nvidia DCS players.

Wait for the Oculus Rift consumer version, the OR prototypes are simply testbeds and not good enough for combat flight sims, yet.  As others have said the link you posted is for the Samsung Gear VR powered by Oculus which isn't made for combat flight simulator use.

Having owned and sold a DK2 and with the hints that are out there about April being the release of CV1 I say wait for CV1.

So far there is no official date for the CV1 release, Are those hints trustable?

The only fact we know is the 500k units order to Spectra and the speculation about that:

I think that the CV1 will not be released before Sept-Oct next year.

Oculus is also snapping up expertise around camera tracking, and have just been joined today by Nimbe VR (hand tracking), 13th Lab (environment reconstruction) and Chris Bregler (motion capture), which may also delay the release of the CV1: http://simulatortrends.com/nimble-vr-joins-oculus/

well its not an easy answer...for me there are two flaws with the dk2 right now...

1. being the resolution (its not perfect) if you dont have labels on...there is no way you will be able to find a distant dot of a plane in the sky. So if you're a combat sim purist...and there is no other way for you to enjoy sims then the resolution will not allow u to play in a manner u are used to at the moment.

2. this is a bigger problem imho than the resolution. The fact that it is too fiddly. So this being a developer kit, things are not just plug and play...although there has been significant improvement with subsequent rift drivers...you still have to mess around a bit for things to start working. when i first received my dk2 in august, i spent 2 hours per demo to get it working, with all the settings that you had to fiddle with. Now everything just runs for me. becuz i know what i have to do and what settings i need to change.

But i am an old hack who has gone through messing with IRQ settings  back in the early 90s just to get a sound blaster working. So if you dont have the patience to fiddle with settings, or lack the comfort level with messing around with your pc settings, then getting the dk2 to work will be an exercise in frustration.

Having said that, I"ve been pc gaming since the late 80s. and the dk2 is very very close to the holy grail. and I got it becuz i wanted to see for myself despite knowing that something better is on the way.  Study sims are now interesting to me with the dk2 when previously i found them to be tedious. assetto corsa is just a whole 'nother level with a g27 force feedback wheel and dk2. and in the grand scheme of things, 350 bucks is about 3.5 half decent meals for two at a restaurant. my $0.02.

Just a question would it be possible to have the game running on a PC but outputting to the 1440x2560 screen on the note4?

Not fluently enough to be a good experience.

Unless you pull a DK2 and take phone apart until all you have is the screen section.
