BlitzPig_EL Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 In this... My local airport had it's semi annual air fair and the Yankee Air Museum's "Yankee Lady" was there. I just had to do it. It was an amazing thing to do. This is the second warbird I've flown in, the other was a B25, and other than the fact that they are both bombers, there is little to compare between them. The B17 is much much quieter in flight, so much so that hearing protection was not needed for our 30 minute flight. It's also slower (no surprise), and much more docile in it's moves. We ran between 160mph and 180 mph IAS. Oh, and it's really tiny inside. So much for my babbling, more pics... View from the open bomb bay doors. And finally the view from the bombardier's seat. And yes, you could look through the Norden sight. One more crossed off the bucket list. 3
leitmotiv Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 i have big smile on my face just by looking at pictures, must have been awesome experience

Feathered_IV Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 Jeeze that's amazing. Congratulations! I'd love to see a bomber modelled in a flight sim where you can physically leave your seat and walk to another station. Beautiful photos too by the way.
79_vRAF_Friendly_flyer Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Very cool! I'm just a tinsy winsy bit jealous...
Mac_Messer Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Didn`t they let you film during flight? How about some turret view photos?
BlitzPig_EL Posted September 16, 2013 Author Posted September 16, 2013 I only have a small card in my camera, so no video, and besides, I wanted to enjoy the flight and not work the whole time. The upper turret is just the external parts and the dummy guns. The inner power workings are removed to make space for a couple of seats in that area. Here is a shot looking forward from the right waist gunner position. What you see is the mechanism and oxygen bottle for the ball turret. The wooden box on the right fuselage is the ammo for the waist gun. If anyone doing FM work is looking at this thread, I want you to pay particular attention to the shot of the engines in flight. Note that the cowl flaps are closed. And gee, the engines did not overheat. Shocking huh, sim flyers. We were at approx, 2200ft ASL at 160mph IAS, the temperature on the ground at the airport (670ft MSL) was 70 degress F. I looked at the cyl head temps and there were no where near the high end of the marked safe range.
SOLIDKREATE Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Wow man awesome! They were giving ride in our B-17E we have in Everett, WA. At the Flying Heritage club lives the only 'ORIGINAL FLYING' Fw-190A-5 in the entire world!
Freycinet Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 I was also surprised at how cramped the B-17 was inside... - Something you can only realise when you actually go through it yourself.
=LD=Hethwill Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Great experience. Thank for sharing. Good they let you roam around and just have a good time... and good pics. Salute !
71st_AH_Hooves Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Wow dude thanks for sharing these! They look awesome. What an oppurtunity!
Bearcat Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Choctaw and I flew in that same bird a few years back at the WWII weekend in Reading Pa. .. What an experience.. It certainly gave me an appreciation for what those guys in the heavies went through.. I was amazed at how tight it was in there and it became clear to me why the casualties were so high.
352nd_Wheels Posted October 8, 2013 Posted October 8, 2013 I've been inside a couple of B-17's but I have yet to fly in one. I was also surprised at how cramped they are inside. Wheels
6./ZG26_Emil Posted October 9, 2013 Posted October 9, 2013 Wow I wasn't expecting that I thought it would be a post about having a lesson in a Cessna
