Mastermariner Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 (edited) The BoS is obviously getting very near to release for us early buyers so I need to assemble a new computer asap and would very much appreciate your inputs and ideas on this. I'm thinking 6-8 core AMD ( I'm not touching Intel! ) and a AMD GPU with 3 GB memory. I already have a good Samsung SA950 monitor, TiR 5, Logitech G940 and a CH throttle quadrant. So what CPU, MB, GPU do you suggest? How much memory? Can I skip the HDD and go for SSD only? Master Edited September 15, 2013 by Mastermariner
Uufflakke Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 I keep an eye on this thread 'cause I need to buy a new rig next year. (Still on XP and March/April 2014 no security updates anymore) I want to play BoS maxed out so want to know what specs are recommended. Hopefully I will understand all this 'nerdy' computer savvy language.
Creepermoss Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 As much as it pains me to say it, being a steadfast AMD fan, buy Intel i5/i7 for gaming. The current generation of 8 core AMD chips simply don't compete when it comes to "power-per-core", and the savings from buying a cheaper chip are lost, when you end up buying an Intel next year anyways.
=BKHZ=Furbs Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 You dont need more than 4 cores for gaming, BOS will run best on 4 cores if i remember Jason correctly. The latest i5 CPU is your best bet, i7 if you can afford it.
Mastermariner Posted September 15, 2013 Author Posted September 15, 2013 Perhaps I need to ad that overclocking is out of the question since I live Bangkok with temps of 30-40C. And Intel is out due to place of manufacture. Not touching it, period!! Master
=BKHZ=Furbs Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 Then get the fastest 4 core AMD CPU you can get, and water cool it.
NonWonderDog Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 This is usually the first place to check for up-to-date PC recommendations: http://www.logicalincrements.com/ That list is pretty heavily Intel-biased right now, but there are plenty of AMD GPU recommendations there.

I think that assessment is .. questionable.. My specs: AMD Fx-8350|ASUS M5A99X|OCZ ZT 750W PS | ASUS VE248 Seagate 1 TB Barracuda 7200RPM HDD|SB X-Fi XtremeGamer Corsair Force 3 240G SSD|32G Corsair Vengance DDR3 1600 XFX DD FX-HD 7870 2GB 256-bit GDDR5|Win 7 Ultimate COOLER MASTER Gemini II S524 .. and my rig blazes. The rig I have now falls under superb on that chart (very nice BTW) by virtue of my processor and my RAM (at least IMO) and I have no problems running anything.
Creepermoss Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 (edited) I'm not saying they are bad chips, at all. But, when they have 2x the cores, and fall short of quad core chips that run at a lower clockspeed, that raises my eyebrows abit. They do multithreaded stuff better, for sure, that's where AMD shines. Unfortunately, the majority of game developers don't feel it's worth the time/expense to write their code to help the AMD guys. Take a look, the FX-8350 is outperformed in every game related benchmark anandtech ran on them, by an i5 3570k, which isn't even the high-end I5 model. The price difference between the two is like $20 USD, money I'd spend for the gains shown in this comparison. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/697?vs=701 The other caveat, is the power consumption of the Fx-8350 would worry me if I ever went to OC it, while the i5 uses something like 60% less juice, and are known to clock upwards of 4.5 on air cooling, at stock voltages. It's good to hear that yours is powerful, though. Sounds like it might be just what the OP is looking for. Edited September 16, 2013 by [JG2]Creepermoss
Revvin Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 It's a topic I've looked into in recent months but had to put on hold, my past 4 systems have been AMD based for the bang for buck price advantage over Intel but this time around I'm seriously considering Intel because as Creepermoss says Intel out perform AMD on just about every gaming benchmark I've seen. It also pains me to say I may go back to nVidia too despite having used AMD for years.
Skoshi_Tiger Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Even though I've been putting off upgrading for quite a while (I was going to upgrade for CoD but didn't have too), I doubt I will be upgrading until after BoS has been released. First I'll see what performance I get using my current rig then read the reviews on performance by others before deciding what path I follow. Trying to judge the performance of an application before it is released does not make sense. There are too many variables.
=BKHZ=Furbs Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 (edited) All i will be upgrading for the BOS release is my GPU, going from a GTX580 1.5GB to a GTX770 2GB My i72600k@ 4.5 should be enough for a good while yet i think Edited September 16, 2013 by Furbs
theOden Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 Fetching a i7-4770K powered GTX780 tomorrow as I don't bother over place of manufacture. Think I'll add a new keyboard to that too, aboot time.

Mastermariner Posted November 6, 2013 Author Posted November 6, 2013 It’s up and running! See my sig! A few nervous days assembling and installing and now I can hopefully do something more than just email and play solitude, which is by the way NOT lagging. Master

Master Tell us how it's working when you get to use it a bit. I would be very interested hearing experience both from CloD and RoF.
