Interesting observation...

I was hit in the left wing multiple times by a Yak today while having some QMB fun. For the giggles, I looked down at the wing to check out the previously existing 2D black spots and what did I see?

I saw wing spars and some internal components... Black spots were still there and still as horribly 2D as ever and the quality of the textures weren't the best, but I could see the inside of my wing! The INSIDE!

How new is that? It certainly wasn't there 6 weeks ago...

Nice to see some progress in that regard.

EDIT: I didn't get a screen capture, but I'm sure I'm probably not the only one to have noticed this.

It's always been like that Falk. Nothing has changed. ROF is like that too.

I observed this ealier and commented on it. Initially, the lack of "beneath the skin" damage was a let-down for me, but not a show-stopper.

The 2-D decals were below the standard for a modern flight sim. The ultimate example  of superb visual damage modelling, IMHO,  is in a game I will not mention here, but how Can One Deny it is awesome once one has seen it?

The devs quietly replaced the 2-D decals with some very effective graphics. A great improvement. I'm surprised more haven't commented on it.

Too busy complaining about the unlocks, I think................................... ;)

Happy Holidays all-

Edit: Jason saw your post and was surprised- It definitely hasn't always been there on my computer- maybe a graphics driver upgrade on my end allowed it to show?

Genuinely don't know about that.

The quality of the visual DM has been one of my largest issues with this title.

EDIT: I will concede that the spars may have been under the 2D spots, but they were previously not visible.

Yep, I've been too busy being away because of them to have seen the upgrade sooner.

I don't remember ever seeing just 2D decals alone if I've been heavily damaged. The 3D insides visible through holes on the plane has always been there for me. Not just the insides of the wings but the engine too has always been visible through holes on the cowling of atleast the Bf109.

Maybe you just haven't been damaged heavily enough whenever you've taken a look at it until now?

The internal structure of the aircraft has always been there, and always been visible when aircraft are damaged.

There is a screenshot thread in the screenshots sub forum that has screenshots from February showing internal wing spars.

the damage/physics stuff is great

I just ditched my plane in a field and stopped on a hill, then I start rolling backwards and see the tire tracks in the snow

nice!

Must be another cosmic anomaly like the sound engine that I and others have never seen them and you and yours defend the fact that you have.

Either way.

I've noticed the internal structures for some time now but little details like these are easy for me to miss.

Yea but it's uniquely interested when you discover something like this for the first time. Someone on the RoF forums the other day was amazed because they heard some certain sounds (that they hadn't before). It is refreshing that we can still find so many new interesting thing we play every day.

That must be it. You're the only one who hasn't seen them, so unless you have a mouse in your pocket there aren't "others." I'm not defending anything, and its not a cosmic anomoly. It's right here, and this is from Feb/March/April of this year. So, either way indeed.

Chief, one of the neat things I noticed in RoF was the sunlight shining thru bullet holes in the upper wing of my BiPlane onto the top of the lower wing. These little rays of light cast on the top of the lower wing would move around as I maneuvered the AC.

Two of those photos exemplified what I saw.

None of the Russian aircraft are relevant to me - if their DM included it I never would have seen it.

Touche. Perhaps I am spending too much time not getting shot down.

I only started noticing it from the cockpit about four or five weeks ago. Prior to that I only remember the opaque decals. External views may be different, not sure.
