German Warbirds

I had been to the Messerschmitt Museum last weekend with our DCG Coop Group and it was once again stunning to see some of the last remaining  six  Bf-109 operating world wide.

We were not able to see the planes flying, however the HA-200, BF109-G4 and the Me-262 are completely operational right now, awhile the Bf109-G4 flew the day before.

Here are some impressions

I also asked for the flight feeling the 109 is offering to the pilot, which he compare in short to a flat Ferrari, like a plank on the street.

The feeling, entering the shop was just great, we directly smelt this typical aircraft oil bouquet...not like the taste one may know from motorbike shops but sometlhing certain. The two hour you got in the hall are really special and worth for each warbird enthusiast.

Nice pictures! Especially the 109 closeups (though paint looks quite dirty in your pics? Though it was way cleaner apparently).

Seems like there's also a Bf108 in their collection (as seen in first pic behind the red 7). I always have to laugh a little about those Kabinenroller though, they're so cute

Would love to attend a visit myself if it wasn't that far away from my hometown...

The two more G series you talking about were on the opposite site, the picture without engine.

E1 isnt operational as far as I know.

Another E1 is in the German Museum:

Great tour and very good photography some of them.

E series still the most sexy 109, no doubt... I mean as sexy as a ugly plane goes ;)

Emil is not the pretiest, the aerodynamicly clean shape of the G-10 and Kurfürst is more appealing to me.

It still got the job done which was all that mattered. It deserves to continue flying today.

A buddy of ours always comes up with the distinction between warbirds Organic and Rough designs, this does not include the radials though where there is no such distinction and taste is way more refined.

Rough, like a P-40 or a 109E, those are my kind of good looking warbirds. A P-51 for example, Organic, doesn't really appeal that much.

Regarding the 109's, hard to say but something of the E "tough nuts" design got lost after the F.

Speaking of design alone :)

Where is this museum? Berlin? If I ever go over to Germany this is a must stop. Wow.

Not really correct.

The Museum is the Traditionsflugzeuge Messerschmitt Stiftung at Manching (~80km north of Munich), which offers the operational Bf109, Me262, HA200 etc...

It is implemented and financialy supported by Cassidian/EADS.

As it is a military research and development ground they are really sensible and correct there.

This means you have to send a registration with passport ID at least a months before and hope to get a place.

However you must be take the active part and shouldnt wait for things to roll  in after you send in the registration.

The visit is for free and just a very noble offer for enthusiast.

Each last friday a month (well basically) is visiting day from 13h - 15h.

I dont know the dates for coming year.

As the Flugwerk went financially down, two Fw190-A were sold to the Luftwaffe/Bundeswehr, also located at the Cassidian ground. Maybe those two operational planes will be transfered aswell to the Messerschmitt halls to pair with the Bf109...although I fear not.

The non operational planes are taken from Deutsches Museum (in the City of Munich)

Most interesting planes are in the Museum itself in the city and not in the Flugwerft Unterschleissheim although one should actually think. All ww2 planes are at Isartor in Munich City, just the spanish licence build of the He-111 is located in Unterschleißheim (Flugwerft), next to some more modern aircrafts.

Bachstelze - barely used, unliked ,used as recon dragged behind submarines at max height of 100m, not self operational.

Thanks for more stunning photos, btw Cassidian is Airbus Defence & Space these days as they rebranded all the EADS divisions. Eurocopter is Airbus Helicopters (ugh), Astrium is part of Airb.D&S.
