FlatSpinMan Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I used to play the original a bit, and am enjoying this later version but man it is hard. I just keep losing squaddies left and right. Got down to only 3 living ones in my barracks, and two of them were hospitalised. Every veteran I had is gone except for one corporal, plus when your troops go down you lose all the teach and weapons they were carrying (I think). This game is brutal. Good fun though.
IRRE_Belmont Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I used to Until Sergeant Bacon and Corporal Cheesecake were killed in action
Matt Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 I played X-Com a lot and most recently again when Enemy Within got released. If you don't have it already, i would highly recommend getting it. It's well worth the money and definately improves the game a lot (new story missions, weapons, equipment and other additions and changes). I also found it a bit easier with Enemy Within, mostly because you can get MEC suits, which are pretty tough. When a soldier dies, you should get the equipment back. Assuming that you won/survived the mission.
=LD=Hethwill Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Well worth it. Once you get through it all, restart and use the Long War mod.... oh boy, seems like a new game entirely.
I/JG27_Rollo Posted November 24, 2014 Posted November 24, 2014 Used to play it after release and I constantly think I should continue but somehow there's always other games getting in the way...
FlatSpinMan Posted November 28, 2014 Author Posted November 28, 2014 Hi guys I might check out that Enemy Within thing in the Steam sale, thanks, but as it is I have more than enough to keep me busy in five nanoseconds of gaming per week. I'm glad to know that the equipment isn't lost. That really made the losses hurt, but heck, newbies are cheaper than equipment so what they hell. I ended up restarting the campaign last week. I couldn't live with the deaths of so many good soldiers on my conscience: Ana Karenina Bryan Habana Wasim Akram Felipe Contemponi Kareem Abdul Jabbar Maria Sharapova Waqar Younis Mao Tse Tung was the lone survivor when I pulled the plug. Naming them makes it so much more interesting.
6S.Manu Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 (edited) I've all the old series on Steam, and of course the newest too (with E:W DLC). I usually play with all campaign's options ON but I can't find a real balance in difficulty. While Normal mode is too easy, in the Classic mode the AI cheats in the worst way ever seen in a VG: you'll miss multiple and consecutive 90% shots while the AI will kill you from extreme ranges and through many covers. That's a bad way to improve difficulty by the Devs. Anyway the game is full moddable, and if you want to really hurt yourself then you should try "Long War" Mod. If you want something like the old one instead, check Xenonauts. Edited November 28, 2014 by 6S.Manu
LLv34_Flanker Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 S! I have it too. Just did not like the over 90% shots missing, AI getting free turns when appearing on scene, their ability to get crippling shots from incredible places etc. Maybe a bit too streamlined game, but entertaining to a degree.
Matt Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 I might check out that Enemy Within thing in the Steam sale, thanks, but as it is I have more than enough to keep me busy in five nanoseconds of gaming per week. Even more reason to get it. It will improve your limited gaming time considerably.
FlatSpinMan Posted November 28, 2014 Author Posted November 28, 2014 There are quite a lot of missed shots, aren't there? I'm just playing in Normal mode. I did select the option for it in the "Second Wave" settings though, so I'll just suck it up. The aliens engaging while I'm moving strikes me as harsh but fair. What I hate is the way aliens drop into areas on your flanks or to your rear. Again, fair enough, it makes it more challenging, but it is hard.
