Will Nvidia's PhsyX be in BoS...eventually?

I've seen a Rof vid showing off its physics and interested if PhsyX would be implemented. I've not used it before but thinking about upgrading my graphic card and could be the difference between AMD or Nvidia.

Any help much appreciated gents.

Physx doesn't really do anything for complex calculations, actually it can't do anything for flight physics. It's actually pretty much worthless for air combat sims because it's canned computations for certain effects - visually.

It's great for visual FX in small quarters, looks terrific in PlanetSide 2. Serves little to no purpose in this genre since it's still relatively simple and limited.

Thanks for the useful reply

I'm not trying to steer you wrong, PhysX just isn't good for this genre. It can't add anything, the calculations for these physics are custom and therefore have to be processed in the CPU since they can't be offloaded to the PhysX's predefined calculations.

I have a GTX770, it's amazing for every game I play. I haven't used Radeon since it was ATI. It was a good purchase costwise back then, but these days I just see more consistent performance and driver packages from nVidia.

I reinstall the Nvidia drives. some days ago.

I don´t install. 3D software, HDMI sound and PhysX,

I only install main driver.

I get a BIG boost in RoF FPS and many others games.  :o:

I have 560Ti. With Nvidia driver 314.22. now .

And I don´t have any problem, without PhysX :)

I think the physics engine of RoF is already pretty impressive..

PhysX is just a gimmick IMHO and separates gaming community more as it is brand spesific feature. Limited use could possibly be on ground strafing etc, but otherwise just waste of resources.

Thanks all and I've been an Nvidia fanboy for sometime but never used the PhysX setting. With the drop in price and 3Gig of Memory I've been tempted by the Radeons...looks like the 8 series might be out in October so I'll wait bit longer and see what happens with pricing. Meanwhile, hopefully the TF patch will speed up things in Cod :)

Swoop, the naming or numbering is going to be a bit different than now. Rage3D or Guru3D have info on it on forums. I am looking forward to the new cards as well :)

Physx is only really for eye candy, but that doesn't mean it's completely useless for a flight sim. Imagine flying through a cloud and leaving a swirling hole behind you.

Mafia II had dynamic tire smoke two years ago. There would have to be a lot more particles for wingtip vortices to show up, but you get the idea:

The recent nVidia tech demos finally have believable fluid simulation, but recreating these pictures is probably a few years away.

I thought PhysX sounded like a great idea, especially the ability to put it all on to a second Graphics card, that could be different to your primary one, extra eye candy on your old unloved card and no loss of FPS.

I would think it could have had great benefits to Flight sims which always struggle for GPU recources, Smoke, ground dust and cloud effects on your old card with no need for SLi, shame it did not catch on

It would be really interesing as far as collisions and particle management goes, although for the most part the physics engine of RoF is already really nice on its own...

Also, what of AMD users?

I do not think 777/1C has any intentions doing any brand exclusive things like PhysX to BoS. Not a very sound idea in a market that has far less buyers than the AAA-titles. There are OpenCL based solutions that work on both brands thus not making BoS hardware dependant.

I think that is the reason PhysX never took off, no game developer wants to alienate maybe half of their customers, or spend time on a feature that is only brand specific, Especially in this (under funded) genre.

Shame, I have never used PhysX but the thought of using an older GRX card to run the extra particle effects/eye candy etc. with no FPS loss appealed to me  :P

There actually is a loss of fps if you are using a single card solution. If you use a dual card solution, with one older card, you won't see as much of a hit but then you are using up a slot that could be used to go SLI.

I use PhysX in Planetside2 and it makes some of the effects pretty nice, but I have a 770 now which doesn't hurt performance too much. On my old 580, it halved the framerate, or more, when lots of effects were going on.

For BoS it can only really be used for visual effects, it can't augment the physics already in place to create the flight, collisions, etc because the underlying physics engine is far more complicated than the equations PhysX does.

The explosion effects are quite nice, and having added debri kicked up would be really cool - but mostly go unnoticed. The explosions would probably be the only aspect that could be improved utilizing physx. But you'd really need a second card unless you have a 770 or better, otherwise it will hurt performance significantly
