SCG_Neun Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 Well I jumped into ROF and fired up a campaign just to test out the visibility as it relates to this discussion and I have to say....it's the best I've seen, but that doesn't take anything away from Crow's suggestion. If they can improve it in BOS, so much the better. I've tried to follow all the suggestions and the points made in this thread, and there's a lot of great comments and experience here. Thanks for sharing guys. It's what makes this forum so interesting....
Crow Posted September 25, 2013 Author Posted September 25, 2013 (edited) I just tested out the visibility distance again myself and I figured out what the problem is. RoF dynamically adjusts the size of the aircraft based on the FOV, which is what most games do. The problem is that when you zoom too far out the aircraft just disappears completely. It seriously needs to scale down, but stop at a single pixel if the aircraft is in visual range. There is simply no way to efficiently scan the sky on a single monitor without zooming out the FOV, but as soon as you zoom out the FOV all of the aircraft disappear making zooming out pointless. So your choices seem to be accept being blind or buy three monitors so you can keep the view zoomed in. This is a really unfortunate example of how spending money can net you a lot of benefit in the sim.... Edited September 25, 2013 by Crow

Once Il2 had the final fixed pixel and some people over hate it.

So instead, we just live with aircraft that disappear from view completely at 3km? That seems like a narrow-minded way to look at it. It seems people don't understand the idea of making concessions for the fact that we're effectively looking through a small box. It's like trying to scan the sky through a toilet paper roll. von_Tom Posted September 25, 2013 Posted September 25, 2013 (edited) Fingers crossed Oculus Rift avoids all this issue. Problem is I need to buy a silk scarf too. Hood Edited September 25, 2013 by Hood 1
Fifi Posted September 26, 2013 Posted September 26, 2013 If drawn distance is like in ROF, and plane rendering spot as well, it should be good enough imo. Flying ROF at 2560x1440 it's very fine (in all term sens)
