Return to game from main menu?

I somehow dropped out to the main menu while flying a mission (some combination of the "O" map and escape key, can't replicate so far). I could still control the aircraft, as well as pause and unpause. Eventually I just tried to launch another campaign mission, but it caused a CTD.

 

Has anyone else experienced this? Is a way to return to the game from this state? 

 

 

The campaign airfield map even has markings for the in-progress mission...
