What weapon(s) would you bring, if you could have only one melee and one firearm?

*I added some more choices.

Where's the boat? Not really a weapon, but I heard they can't swim.

Not voting. I have my own favourites.

The boring, serious answer:

Firearm: Model 1938 Mosin Nagant carbine:

mn1938_right.jpg

Light, compact, reliable, plenty accurate, cheap easy-to-come-by ammunition, can withstand a lot of abuse, low ammo consumption, functions well as an emergency melee weapon.

Melee weapon: Ice axe:

If it was good enough for Trotskij, it's good enough for mindless zombies.

The entertaining answer, this is what I'd go with, if my goal wasn't survival but to have fun:

Firearm: Double barrelled, twin tank Larami Super Soaker:

One tank filled with liquid hydrogen sulfide, the other with nitric acid.

Melee weapon: Scythed rollerblades:

Absolutely. It's a favourite among real life 'survivalist' nutjobs as well. You need something you can rely on to actually fire under all circumstances, and as far as firearms go, it doesn't get more reliable than a WW2 era bolt action. I picked the MN carbine, because it's the lightest and most compact, though it does have a reputation for being noisy and kicking like a mule.

AK-47 and a giant can of Zombie repellent.

Posted

Possibly a hefty axe that converts into a luxury apartment, and a couple of squads of cheerleaders.

Posted

The squads could definitely be more lethal...

Posted

Do they still sell Zombie repellent at Cost Co.??

Posted

Firemans axe if they are of "have to destroy the brain, get bitten and die" variety. Or morning star and buckler if they are not.

Ice pick would be great against single "hit the brain" zombie, but I think it could stuck in the cranium. The weapon it's developed from was used from horseback, for a reason.

... do I get to fight from horseback?

Posted

I'd just go for some old fashioned white phosphorous.

Posted

Voted machete because it is closest to what I would use.

I would just use my good old meat cleaver till I unlocked a hand-an-a-half sword

Well, when every weapon I can think of would eventually fail... remember the Combat Rules ... and the first rule reads

  1. Bring a weapon. Preferably, bring at least two. Bring all of your friends who have weapons. Bring their friends who have weapons.

P.S. - Technically "the Guy who dies first" is known as "live ammunition".

I would definetly choose or construct something like a lance to keep them at a safe distance while stabing their heads with the sharp end of it...

A lance has one issue though: As soon as a zombie gets in behind the spear point, it becomes more or less useless.

As far as medieval pole arms go, I'd personally go for a pollaxe. It's fast, it's light and is versatile as hell with posibility of both stabbbing, slashing and crushing attacks.

If I was a bit more skilled with a blade, I'd propably go for a rennaissance greatsword, also very versatile and contrary to popular belief quite light. Here's a little introduction to what it would do to a zombie:

hilarious how people keep picking medieval melee weapons to deal with enemies that are numerous, arrive in droves, can only die if their brains are destroyed, and will transform/kill you if they bite you, ie you don't want them anywhere near you.

Lighten up johnny boy.  You won't get far in the zombie apocalypse when all you've got are a handful of cutting remarks.

Depends on how bright they are. An educated zombie might take offense and walk off, ashamed of itself.

So John, for your tactics to work you might wanna hide in a university.

Well John, we were tasked with picking a firearm/ranged weapon AND a melee weapon. And when it comes to dealing damage in hand-to-hand combat, you just can't beat the late medieval/early renaissance in creativity.

More choices added to the pole!

WTF is a cricket paddle?  Is it like a baseball wand?

Plus I'd fight with a poleaxe, but vote in a poll

You haven't seen 'Shaun of the Dead' have you?

You should.

Personally, I'd like an Mi-8, 4 rocket pods under the bird would give zombie hordes a really bad day! icon_mad.gif icon_mad.gif icon_mad.gif

And it'd be great for picking up survivors.

That's the one problem with Zombie apocalypses, the amount of pain a military vehicle/weapon/aircraft can dish out these days would make any zombie attack rather difficult. It'd be like the film Zulu, but with automatic weapons and helicopter gunships versus slower zombies without edged weapons...

Do they call a Cricket Bat a Cricket Paddle in Shaun Of The Dead?

I don't think they call it anything. I, like the OP, was under the impression, that a cricket bat could also be called a 'paddle', but apparently that's incorrect.

I'm not going to argue correct cricket terms with an Englishman.

Gunfire attracts zombies which means more gunfire which can attract even more zombies. The more you shoot the more likely you will face a horde and the less likely you will come away with your genome unmolested. Also, guns are rarer than virgins in Australia and you gotta use what you can get hold of.

In an apocalyptic world I feel as though people should go down however they want, and I really do wish you the best of luck. Thing is, it effects me in that, one day I will have to separate your zombie riddled head from your shoulders and I will be damned if I don't say I told you so.

Finally, I joke around - a lot - but zombiezzz are serious mkay?

Now there's a thought.

What about Ned Kelly armour, would that do much against Zombies?

Posted

It is a well known fact that piercing weapons are useless against zombies, since they cannot bleed out and have no working vital organs, so they must be slashed, crushed or burned. But even crushing is also tough (works better on skeletal warriors) since the layers of dead tissue act as shock absorbent armour. Hence icepicks are useless and cricket bats not much better.

So cutting their heads or legs off is the best bet for melee, and the best cutting weapon is the samurai sword.

For a firearm you really need explosive projectiles of some sort, or a flamethrower.

I have used the katana - fireball combination for years now and seldom have a problem with zombies. :)

Posted

Are the zombies batshit crazy running ones, or classic slow walking ones?
Think I would go for the cricket bat. Less mess, more surface. Better chance of a good hit, and to knock them over.

And yes. A boat would be good. I have never seen a zombie doing the butterfly. Unless there are zombie whales. Then the boat and the cricket bat would be of little use.
