fergal69 Posted September 7, 2013 Posted September 7, 2013 I purchased RoF & IL-2 1946 on disc as purchased them when they were released. As they are now both on Steam, will it be possible to link my disc copies through Steam, or will I have to re-purchase them through Steam?
FuriousMeow Posted September 7, 2013 Posted September 7, 2013 You can use the Steam overlay with non-Steam games. You will not be able to have Steam achievements (which is about as worthwhile as a boxful of sand in the sahara) or any of the other Steam-centric features. I have yet to find any benefit from adding games I haven't purchased through Steam to Steam. I've found more benefits getting games I've purchased through Steam to not rely on Steam for launching. I like Steam, it just boggles my mind that there is a sudden need for it for a program that has been operating smoothly without it for years.

The users on your friend list can see that you're playing with that game. Edited September 7, 2013 by 6S.Manu

As mentioned; people can see you playing, you can chat with them without having to alt+tab and you have access to Steam's overlay features. There's a lot of people that is almost using Steam exclusively for everything these days, so being able to incorporate non-steam games in some small form is very attractive to some people. Like, I don't use Live Messenger or anything like that any more, I use the Steam friends list for everything. So being able to chat with them while I'm in a game is fantastic.
fergal69 Posted September 8, 2013 Author Posted September 8, 2013 Thanks for the comments guys. Thought if could link them on Steam, wouldn't have to worry about updates as they would come through automatically without having to do it the old fashioned way.

SKG51_robtek Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 (edited) But they really need to stop selling CloD. There is still further developement and bug fixing going on, though not by 1c. Also it is now still fun to fly in the state it is with the TF - 'mod'! And you can do it right now, no waiting for the 'dove on the roof' :-) Edited September 14, 2013 by robtek

As he realizes that game's state (and being a casual gamer he's not going to know about the TF's mod, so he will play the vanilla version), then I fear he will not buy BoS. SKG51_robtek Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 Isn't it sad that it always comes to the lowest common denominator?
Wolger Posted September 14, 2013 Posted September 14, 2013 Hi, not sure if this is right place to ask, if there any offers to get the older games if we pre-ordered BoS now?
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted September 15, 2013 Posted September 15, 2013 (edited) The other advantage, as I understood it, is the game ('46) is fully patched and up to date on Steam. You don't have to do multiple download/upload, why wont 4.09 finish loading, is this HSFX or is it, wait did I remember to load 4.08m? @!#$, I'm going to go watch some more Wallace and Gromit while this thing loads! I never got around to loading it on my newest system. I will probably buy it on Steam so I don't have to dig out disks and search for patches to reload the thing. DoWSiq6Six Posted September 16, 2013 Posted September 16, 2013 If you bought a physical copy of a game and now its on steam you don't have to buy it again. Go to steam, click on "games", click on "activate" (or claim I forget). Now the CD key is linked to Steam. You no longer need the disc - you can download the game off Steam servers anytime. Have done this with several games, including Cliffs of Dover. If this isn't what your talking about, disregard.

Works if you bought the game with the same distributor that handled to Steam. 1946 was sold in a very diverse array of deals with diverse publishers and distributors. Some of them might not wok
fergal69 Posted September 22, 2013 Author Posted September 22, 2013 (edited) E-mailed my enquiry to Steam, who said try my serial keys. On Steam, went to Add a Game, then Activate a product on Steam & entered my RoF serial code & received a message to say the code was invalid. Looks like RoF will have to stay outside of Steam, but as 1946 is right down in price via steam I'm inclined to purchase it through Steam, so any updates come through automatically. You can add games to your Steam Library. I've added Rof & 1946 to my Steam Library, but when asking 1946 to run it requires the disk - not sure that as 1946 has been added to my Steam library that it will automatically update. Mogster Posted September 22, 2013 Posted September 22, 2013 The only games that will work fully with Steam are those bought through it or have keys that can be activated through it. If you simply add a game to your Steam games library then it just lets you use the Steam lobby features nothing else.
