Noob questions about map and radio

Hi everyone.

 

Nice to see lots of familiar names from other combat flight sims and indeed from other games.

 

Now, please don't flame me for these seemingly basic and possibly dumb questions, but I have searched this forum to no avail (the search engine does not allow "map' for example, 'cos it's too short) and there ain't no manual (unless I've missed it):

 

1.0  In 'Expert' mode is there no map at all? I mean, I understand that my little plane icon won't be there to show me where I am, but pressing the M key gets me zip. What am I doing wrong?

2.0  Are there comms with home base?  In Il2 1946 and CloD you could request take off clearance, landing clearance, vector to home base, assistance, vector to bandits/targets, etc.  Am I missing something or is this not present in BoS?  Wingmen commands are there, of course, but I can't see anything for ground control.

Press the letter "O" to access the bigger map either in normal or expert, not sure about the ground control tho.

Edit: Remember in expert pressing letter "i" will toggle your plane icon on or off with no radar, normal has icon and radar.

Letter "H" to toggle the Hud, ie: labels, chat box and compass.

Use the O key to bring up the map

 

Very limited comes in this game. I really hardly use them anyway.

So, O gets me a map with which to navigate, even in Expert mode?  Any idea how to zoom the map btw? Mouse wheel utton works in CloD, RoF, etc. but not in BoS.

 

And there are no comms with ground control; only with flight members?

 

Shame.  Not sure if that's realistic or just not modded (ground comms were modded in Il2 1946 and CloD).

There should be an update this week, which will improve comms. Maybe we will get ground comms then. Right now, you're pilot will ask for take off and landing clearence by himself (automatic).

The mouse wheel is actually working fine for me as zoom in expert mode on the map.

 

There is little comms that you actively initiate, just some commands to your flight. There is some automated communication in campaign, after take-off, when you reach the target area, after you completed the objective, and when you approach the home field for landing.

"O" does indeed get me an in-flight map even in "Expert" mode, and "I" then toggles the a/c icon and radar for that slightly less 'expert' experience!

 

The mouse wheel also zooms this map in and out. 

 

Huzzah!

 

Need to remember to pause before pressing "O" though, because the flying continues whilst looking at the map...

 

Shame about the comms - vector to home airfield or to targets, bandits, etc. would be a winner.  not sure how much of this there was, however, for either side on the eastern front.  Battle of Britain different of course due to the extensive radar network installed.

You can also engage the level autopilot while studying the map.

At least in MP this is a wise move if you don't want to plough the field...
