Ai, and some quick conclusions...

Well, it happened that yesterday I had perhaps the best (dog)fight so far in BoS...

In LA-5 cockpit I flew some intercept mission and my flight did the mission objective, however Me-109s wouldn't let us go that easily.

In fact they got all my botmates while I managed to shot down one 109 and another 109 was damaged, but two of them set sights on me.

In long fight I lost one 109 but was still tangled with German squad leader (I assumed he was the leader because of skill), but received some shots and decided to run for home as fight wasn't really turning in my favour.

After some time I was sure that I was chased by only one 109, at distance so I decided to turn into him and fight.

I avoided head on and start to maneuver with him... after initial merge I was sure that I'm going to get him into my sights as he appeared to made a mistake by flat turning while I went up and down on him.

He just continued to do his flat turns and after taking one unsuccessful shot at him (I hate ShVAK cannons since FB but they hate me even more) I slowly started to lose energy in turnfight and he started to gain on me, WW1 style.

So I figured this would be right time to panic.

However I apparently made the best decision and gathered what energy I had in dive, engaged boost and firewalled it for home...

109 wasn't able to gain on me and I escaped from what seemed to be a certain defeat.

Early unconfirmed conclusions.

1.

I'm judging that 109 in hands of more expert player would be perhaps even more deadly, especially tactically, and LA-5 is not up to par making maneuvers with Messer.

LA-5 is fast. Certainly in 109 category at lower alts where most action seems to be.

LA-5 is best suited as interceptor and perhaps JABO.

2.

I don't have experiences with Yak-1, but from what I gathered, I should expect somewhat more agile plane than LA-5.

3.

AI is much better than one in IL-2 1946.

I really could not touch that 109 in 1 v 1 fight and in IL-2 1946 I could shot any 4 AI aces in contemporary planes (Bf-109G vs Spit IX, P-51 vs Ki-84 etc.).

In this game that doesn't seem possible which is really nice.

PS. I'm enjoying campaign especially on this level 9 pilot, still learning stuff and missions are getting more and more hard as I progress...

And in 1946 the AI even cheats by flying a simplified FM and being able to do things the player can't. Not so in BoS, which makes the AI that much more impressive.

The current AI has many flaws still, but they are mostly of a tactical nature with suicidal attack patterns for fighters against bombers and AI often not attack their designated targets.

The flying itself is pretty damn good.

DKoor - you are a man who knows his AI. You flew so many missions in the old Il2 campaigns. Glad to hear you enjoy the new Il2 missions and AI.

I have learned to enjoy single missions in this game too. And have fine-tuned my landings, level bombing and shooting considerable while doing it. I find this game beautiful, in special when you land and have this living breathing airbase with walking ground crew  and nice objects. No other ww2sim got this quality

Yeah.

I posted several tracks that shows AI cheating.

For example, AI does 200km/h over structural breaking speed @ sea level with A6M2.

Bf-109 can engage 100% prop pitch at 1000kph speed etc.

1946 DM is not anywhere near BoS too. Now you can actually rely on your LMG's to kill E/A.

AI, while not at players level of tactic and positioning, is still a good adversary and is not to be messed around.

Overall "feeling" or "immersion" is much better than in IL-2 1946. Those improvements , coupled with great graphics really do set the bar much higher.

Thanks mate.

I really do enjoy.

Missions on hardcore are something else... I'm still under impression of one high altitude mission where I intercepted medium bombers... real eye candy.

Gotta sort out my navigation tho.

You'd probably be really experienced in all things but "flying on the edge" after you put some hours in SP.

MP is unbeaten teacher of flying on the edge, situational awareness and tacts.

But for gunnery, navigation, take-off-landings SP is really good.

I remember that il2 1946 AI was the plague. There was absolutely no way you could catch up to him when having the same plane so you had to constantly break off then engage him as he comes back. The AI in this game is good if you considering it relative to other games, but it's still weak in absolute terms. I wish they would add more randomness to their behavior becase right now you can force the AI in a certain part of the decision tree and keep him there, doing the same things forever over and over.

I like your tracks, many good stuff there  .
