il2 weapon load outs

Sorry if this has been answered or is readily available (please direct me), but am seeking a list or guide to all of the weapons and munitions for the il2. What is the difference been the blue and orange rounds, the different bombs and rockets and their uses, etc. I don't see anything in game, but maybe I'm just missing it?

Many thanks!

Beautiful sim and really enjoying it!

It's probably in a manual somewhere, honestly I haven't looked for one. With that said:

1)Blue = armor piercing

2) Orange = HE

3) RBS rockets are armor piercing

4) ROS/ROFS rockets are HE

5) Gunpods are self explanatory, 23mm's and up with AP will kill most tanks

6) FAB and SC bombs are general purpose HE bombs

7) The number after FAB or SC indicates the bomb mass in kg (ie an SC500 is a 500kg general purpose bomb)

8) The number designation on rockets is the caliber, an ROS-82 is an 82mm HE rocket

Not a complete list probably, but hope it helps.

Edit: Fuses indicate when the bomb/rocket detonates. Impact/contact is self explanatory and any of the timers say how long after impact. Generally I use a 1s delay on bombs so I don't blow myself up. Really big bombs like the SC1000 may require 2-3s timers to avoid wrecking your own plane at low level.  Rockets can be fused to detonate in flight without hitting a target, the range at which the detonate is set at 300m, 600m and so on. I don't believe those distances are terribly accurate however, as they use a simple timer to detonate. So those ranges will vary depending on how fast the launching aircraft is going. I normally go with impact for rockets.

Good explanation.

I think Hrothgar covers it really well.

I'd just add that "hard" targets (tanks and APCs) almost always requires a direct hit (or in the case of lighter bombs within 5 meters) to be destroyed. Only the really heavy bombs can destroy armour with near misses.

Rockets are best used as area weapons due to their extreme inaccuracy.

With some training and proper trimming, you can learn to fire both the Vya-23 and the Sh-37 cannons with great accuracy, and those are in fact your most effective weapons against all targets except buildings (as was the case historically as well)

Many thanks! Ok, so the mixed belts with blue and Orange are obviously combination AP and HE belts?

The ROFS was actually a fragmentation warhead, which made it effective against both soft targets and light armor.

In-flight rocket fusing was meant to be used when intercepting bombers. Otherwise, stick to impact fusing for ground attack.

What does sv stand for in FAB-250sv bomb?

Handy thread. I am just about to start an IL2 career, having so far only flown the LaGG.

I discovered you can kill a tank with a direct hit by an unarmed bomb. I accidentally disarmed my bombs all the time and then spent quite a while trying to figure out why my bombs wouldn't explode. Still, I thought it was pretty cool that I guess the kinetic energy from the bomb itself is modeled and can do damage.

I didn't even know that was possible. I have seen them blow from a direct hit before the bomb does (delay fuse) but didn't know you could disarm bombs completely.
