For now, I have to go with Battle of Britain.

I've heard Blue Max is great but I have not yet seen it, since it's impossible to find that movie in my country in DVD form.

Voted boB but this one should have been on the list: Dark Blue World

Sadly has this side-story thing or should I say main story thing that just

puts the war as a setting.(like most other war movies), I prefer the ones

that just put the war in center: Hamburger Hill, once we were soldiers etc...

I think war itself has all the drama you need, really no need for a sidestory. :)

Dark Blue World would have been more acceptable if its approximation of a flat home counties English airfield didn't look exactly like a mountainous eastern European airfield ... etc.

The Battle of Britain was the first and still is the only film where you get to see some Luftwaffe fighter pilots in a realistic way. VS Redtails for eg.  :) The side plot with Christopher Plummer's personal life sucks and is more boring than a sack of potatos but the stuff to do with ground cotrol and combat are very good....

What would really fun is a refitted version of 'Battle of Britain' with tracer added (perfectly by cgi) and the general combat scenes enhanced to properly emulate reality. This would allow a cinema and disc re-release. Won't happen of course.

Where's Memphis Belle? I voted for Blue Max and would have voted for it regardless. But I would put Memphis Belle up there near the top!

I would have voted for Memphis Belle too. It's an outstanding movie. It truly captures the essence of being trapped in a death crate and fighting your guts out.

Out of the ones listed I would say for me 12 O'Clock High.. but DBW should definitely be on that list.

The Blue Max is magnificent. It's been released on Blu-ray Disc now too.

Voted Dambusters, but would have gone for 633 Squadron if it had been on the list, if only for the music!

I want to say Battle of Britain because I love the scenario, but Blue Max is a better film.

Try this. It ain't a classic, but recent and decent WWII air combat movies are rare as chicken lips. "The Attackers" is a Russian TV miniseries made in 2013 (12 episodes). Give it a “C+” for story line and an “A” for using real Yak-3’s and WWII hardware. Enable closed captions (CC) to view English subtitles.

The Attackers is easy going, end is a bit rushed but overall quite good on some of the details.

Blue Max! Great movie. Watched BOB last week...... God the acting was terrible. Was much better when I watched it when I was a youngster

I just saw The Blue Max (had to get a foreign copy). I've got to say, although the movie is a product of the times when it comes to acting and storytelling, the aerial scenes were impressive. I especially liked the parts where the camera is on top of the engine cowling between the guns, never got tired of that shot.

Given the choices the BOB

You forgot of Red Tails and Pearl harbor...

I wish I could forget Pearl Harbour, No 1 on my worst movies of all time, that said some nice flying stuff.  :(

Red tails has great flying sequences but is not a great movie.

Lucas and co wanted to make a 50s a like movie and achieved it.

Aces high is another ok ish movie, great flying.

P-FIDDYWON THE WAR, 30MM EXPLOSIVES ARE NOTHING AGAINST FREEDOM

Thinking about it, is there any stupid movie about B17's with a subject around the expression of "IT WAS CALLED A FORTRESS FOR A REASON"?

Memphis Belle?.

First time I saw it(when it was released) I thought it was a good movie.

Then the more times I see it the more I see how clichéd it is.

Rolling all the instances from multiple raids into one big Raid story.

Best bit IMO is when David Strathalan is reading the letters he had written to families of the dead crew members intercut with the original Memphis Belle Documentary footage.

It really brings home the cost of war on a human level.

Just watched the flying from Red tails from the Links.

I have Red tails on Blu ray, whish I could edit the corny dialogue LOL

That's a nice movie. Despite old the combat scenes are not ruined be "Star Wars" like CGI sequences as in Flyboys, Red Baron...

I think its the Impossible camera angles in the dogfight sequences that always make CGI dogfights look strange.

One of the best aviatik movies I have ever seen: Der rote Baron (2008)

Excellent dogfightscenes and good actors! The only thing that I don't like is the embedded lovestory!
