Brizzly Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I would like to put in a request simply for this. In addition, the map should have the route depicted on it (no hokey radar icons). As a pilot myself, even with a moving map display with GPS, I carry a simple map with the route drawn on it. I can't imagine the pilots back then not having this at time of takeoff, unless they were completely familiar with their area of operations. I'm sure I will be soon, but it would be nice to have a map with the route depicted without having to fly with all the frivilous icons and what have you in normal mode.
Dakpilot Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Press O to bring up the large map, press I to get rid of icons, will also affect M map not sure if that was what you were looking for Cheers Dakpilot
Brizzly Posted October 31, 2014 Author Posted October 31, 2014 Thanks for that, although I still think that Expert mode should be able to use the M map, just without icons.
Y-29.Silky Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 Thanks for that, although I still think that Expert mode should be able to use the M map, just without icons. Press "I" and it'll at least take out the player/ai icons.
1./KG4_Blackwolf Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 The ROF mini map is great, you can zoom it in, move it around and a few clicks its half screen. Why its not the same here I don't know. It should be.
Sokol1 Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 "Press O to bring up the large map, press I to get rid of icons, will also affect M map" Set "O" (and "M") - besides "I" - to show/hide icons(instrument panel), so pressing "O" to see map (full) the "GPS" is not show. And if are lost still can use "I" to know his position by turnig on the "GPS" .
Brizzly Posted November 1, 2014 Author Posted November 1, 2014 Right, I've got it. I just don't understand why you can press "M" to get a map in normal mode that lets you still be in the cockpit, and you can't use it in Expert mode.
TG-55Panthercules Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 (edited) Right, I've got it. I just don't understand why you can press "M" to get a map in normal mode that lets you still be in the cockpit, and you can't use it in Expert mode. Yeah - I'm puzzled by that too. I keep hitting the M key and nothing happens, then I remember I have to hit "O", and I'm blasted out of the cockpit into the full-screen briefing map. Seems weird, although at some point I assume I'll find a copy of the map I can put on my iPad and then I won't need to use the in-game map at all during flight so I guess it's not a big deal to me. [EDIT] LOL - after writing the above it dawned on me that I might as well unassign the "M" key from the normal in-game map and reassign it to the briefing map, so at least I can call up the map with the key I'm used to. Options are such a wonderful thing, since they let you play the game like you want. Too bad the devs seem to have lost sight of that principle in some of their recent decisions. Brizzly Posted November 2, 2014 Author Posted November 2, 2014 That's what I did too. Same here. I use the same Target config file for all IL2 games (1946, CLOD, and BOS), so I just used the pinky switch as a shift, and assigned the same button I use for "M" on the throttle to "O" with the pinky depressed. Not a big deal, and thanks again for the tip with "O." I've actually been having a little fun with the campaign since I can navigate now in Expert mode.
Sokol1 Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 "...navigate now in Expert"... If configured properly the only difference between EXPERT and NORMAL mode became the external vision - that the first mode dont allow - or one can have a "hardcore" NORMAL mode. 1

People seem to miss this idea, you actually have more options, if there was a custom setting it would, if like other games/sims be locked during the mission. With this system of Expert and Normal with options you actually have more flexibility to play the way you want and change it during a mission...or am I the only person who sees it this way? Cheers Dakpilot
unreasonable Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 The problem with that is that to get hardcore normal you have to reconfigure at the start of every mission, or are the settings saved from one mission to another? I am happy with expert settings, but occasionally it would be nice to see outside view. No axe to grind here myself, I use O with I off, and have got used to turning it on for a second or two. Had to hit the my plane button once when I reached the edge of the map.... It is a much better map than the in game one anyway (which is horrid).
Dakpilot Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 Once you are happy with a "level" of difficulty use one key(bind) on the keyboard to toggle off all the "helpers you don't want. It is then one key press to get it how you like at mission start and still have the options to turn on and off with the original keybindings Cheers Dakpilot

Yep, when in Normal you can make it more hardcore by enabling manual control of the engines ( cem), however you have to do it at the start of each mission. Having the ability for custom realism that is globally set would be imho much better.

Now all I need is a keybind that stops my game crashing when I complete a mission....

Maybe I'm pressing the button wrong , but when I press "M" in Expert mode, nothing happens. When I press "M" in Normal mode, I get a map. I'm only saying that said map should be available in Expert mode as well, just without the icons. I know I could get this by disabling things that "help" me along in normal mode, and keep the map without icons, but I think that the map, with the route drawn on it, without icons, should be available in Expert mode without a penalty in experience points since IMHO this is something a real pilot would have in the cockpit with him. I don't mind pressing "O", and spending a few seconds "heads down" if you will, but I think the "M" map is more realistic, second to actually having a paper map with the route drawn on it. I have to do that enough at work. When I'm playing a sim, I don't have time to spend drawing out my route everytime I have a minute to fly a mission.
