Aircraft visibility in Expert Mode

Recommended Posts

Am I the only person to have extreme difficulty seeing aircraft in Expert mode?  At altitude, I find it almost impossible to pick aircraft out against the white/blue sky.   Typically I see hazy whitish blobs at best.     Is this something that  others experience or do I need to radically increase/decrease my resolution, or maybe get my eyes tested etc?

I think spotting in BoS is excellent. That doesn't mean it's easy.

+1 -- in comparison to WT, CLod, spotting is a breeze.....

I think for the greatest part it depend on the screen you use resolution and contraste so on?!

CloD is easy to, WT is hard, but hell, try DCS. If your not dogfighting a 747 you will have a bad time. DCS is by far the worst when it comes to spotting (ok, the engine is made for BVR rocket fighting, not for WWII dogfights). Let's see what DCS Edge brings. So far, BoS is the best when it comes to spotting

Don't want to bang the graphic settings drum in an unrelated thread but it might be worth dropping down to the balanced preset to see if that helps. Generally I think the visibility of planes in BOS is excellent. One of the more impressive things about the game when compared to other flight sims.

The less fancy wetFX and colour corrections the better it is. Pure out of the game colour with contrast adjusted to no "eye focus overlap" of both white and black, that's what i do to all games.

Lighting is so great that when they come high and abort the pass and turn away you can see the sun glints and make out their shape quite nice.

Obviously at high noon hours sun it becomes very dangerous. Also some camo works great and disrupts the eye focus following a target ( as intended ).

Having recently switched to a 2560*1440p monitor I can say that increased resolution does not really improve distant spotting.

I think they use some kind of scaling system instead of just rendering a dot at distances where you lack the pixels to draw a whole model. This makes spotting much easier than other titles but instead you loose the ability to judge distances between you and the bogey unless you are close enough to have pixels to draw the body of the plane.

If you are at a distance where you should normally see a dot you instead see a real model of the plane but it's drawn at like 5x the size. As you get closer to him he will stay the same size until you are within the radius where you have enough pixels to draw the model in it's proper scale.

You can test this by tracking a far away plane, try zooming in and out, the plane stays the same size regardless of FOV/"zoom".

*edit*

Might be wrong, drunk testing....

I think planes visibility at sky background is very hard in BOS.  At white background is much better but looking for sky even with plane is about 1-2 km from you is usually hard. I got even impression that planes at sky background could dissaper for a while

My issue with spotting in the campaign on expert is that my AI wingmen can spot the enemy at much longer ranges than they appear to me. Upon arriving in the combat zone I just turn my head around and watch them. They'll spot the enemy and lead me right to them at 2k or more and even through clouds.

Lovely radar, but not very immersive.

Spotting is a skill in this game just like other sims. Just takes time to learn how to do it well and consistently. I would also argue that BoS has the best spotting out of any sim out there.

I can easily spot aircraft, and what type they are from 6000m up. But looking up at that blue sky and spotting is another story!
