CIA_Yankee_ Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Salutations, I was just reading another thread when I saw a post (quoted below) that I thought needed highlighting, and further discussion: In my experience the SP campaign gets more interesting the more you play it - missions seem to get more complex both in further chapters and as you play more and accumulate "pilot levels". Thus the first missions of first campaign chapter are very simple - go to your objective by shortest route, destroy your target which may not may not be escorted, go back. In later chapters you may see your airfield strafed by ground assault planes as you take off, run into enemy interceptors if you skip your waypoint and try to reach target by shortest way, go through escort mission without seeing enemy plane then run into huge AI furball at point you were supposed to escort bombers to, or get sent against air covered target without escort. This making missions more complex as you progress is fine idea in theory, but seems to put off many people who look at first missions, say "boring" and never look back. Has anyone any similar experiences to share? I think the writer makes a very good point at the end, and it would be very good if people had more examples of how the campaign missions get more involved as time goes on. I know I intend to play it more, at least once my CTD issues are fixed (which they might be, particularly since I'm upgrading my vid card tonight *grin*). Thank you. Yan
=LD=Hethwill Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I can relate to that quoted text. Equal parts game, imagination and will to act accordingly, given the shortcoming of the moment, makes it quite entertaining. It really depends on the player, the game is just a tool. As you can see from across the forum many guys made their navigation tools, printed HD maps, are writing pilot logbooks and a multitude of other activities which help their own personal fun. In the future we will see more detailed storyline in the game for sure, same as in RoF.
dkoor Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 This is true. Furthermore, it gets much more tough with you progression level. People hate it, but it makes some sense... for instance now I'm level 8 pilot and I'm getting some quite tough missions and have a hard to impossible time to survive once I get involved in fight my LaGG vs 2xAI Bf-109s... they are probably highly skilled AI and they rip my lacquered coffin to bits if I'm not extra careful (to run away in time).
IRRE_Belmont Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I just want QTE's ''PRESS X TO JUMP ON ENNEMY PLANE AND SLICE THE THROAT OF ITS PILOT''
Finkeren Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 True. The first 2 chapters were quite frankly a snooze-fest, then things really started to kick off in chapter 3. Still not loving the design of the campaign, but the missions are quite good.
CIA_Yankee_ Posted October 30, 2014 Author Posted October 30, 2014 Very good to know, especially about AI being tied to pilot level. I wish there was more communication of this design within the game itself, as there's really no way to know that things will get more exciting as time goes on. And QTE finishers would be awesome! WW2 flight simming, Ace Rimmer style! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXYfnWRp1Q0
=EXPEND=Tripwire Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 True. The first 2 chapters were quite frankly a snooze-fest, then things really started to kick off in chapter 3. Still not loving the design of the campaign, but the missions are quite good. I think that has to do more with the fact that they added more functionality into the campaign mission generator as time went on rather than the difference in the chapters. I still have not had a single stat recorded under my profile. Medals and unlocks fine, but no flight hours, sorties, victories. Anyone else in the same boat?
39bn_pavig Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Maybe the "AI tied to pilot level" thing may need some tweaking. I swapped from Lagg3 to La5 once I had levelled up a bit, and noticed that I was getting brutal missions while still learning the plane. It may just be my imagination, but perhaps if it is pilot level alone it would be better if difficulty was based on pilot level x aircraft level. That way it would scale down a bit when you started on a new aircraft (without going all the way back to beginner level.) 2

I started seeing some posts about this a couple of days ago, which persuaded me to switch over and try to do my ground attack grinding in the Stuka and IL-2 during the early stages when my pilot hasn't leveled up yet. That way, I figured the monsters enemy AI would be easier since they wouldn't have leveled up yet either, and maybe my guy wouldn't get slaughtered during his missions. Especially since those are the planes I'd really want the unlocks for - would certainly not want to wind up making it even harder to get them on those planes by foolishly using the other types for the early stages. It does make me wonder if I've missed the icons setting that makes the enemies' names red if they're higher level than you are and green if they're easier (and gray if they're so much below your pilot's level that you don't get EXP for killing them). That would certainly help let us know whether we've wandered into a zone that's too high a level for our pilot.

Yeah, this makes me wonder if I've set myself up for a rough time when I finally learn level bombing and start the He 111 and Pe-2. They will be quite a departure already from the fighter and attack planes I've been flying, an extra hostile environment could make it that much more difficult. Same goes for finally learning CEM, perhaps I should have bitten the bullet and played Expert from the get go, instead of trying to fight tougher AI and learn to keep my engine intact at the same time.
dkoor Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Moral of the story... Go level first attack planes, then bombers then fighters. Surviving in a fighter is much easier than in slow attack plane or bomber.
1./KG4_Blackwolf Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I just thought the devs got wise to the auto pilot :D I'm in the first chapter unlocking the attack planes the only fighter I have unlocked is my dump truck..my lagg. It does seem to get harder after the first half of the unlock tree with any plane I've used so far. I still get a ctd or a freeze after the first mission. I kill the service and 're boot and it seems to work fine.
