choctaw111 Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 This is not a troll or meant to start some heated debate. I run this sim at a steady 60 fps with v-sync on and the tracer visuals are not correct. At 60 fps, a projectile moving at 2,700 fps will travel 45 feet in 1/60 of a second. The tracer should have the appearance of being 45 feet long but in game is only 6 feet long. Cliffs of Dover had this correct. It even changed the tracer appearance (meaning the apparent length of the tracer) depending on game speed, running at 1/2 speed, 1/4 speed, 1/16 speed, etc and even showed the tracers as "dots" when the game was paused. It even showed the individual propeller blades! That was a very well done feature and is missing in BoS. The colors of some of the tracers are not correct either. Why are the ShKAS tracers orange in color? They should be green. The rest of the sims visuals are brilliant to include the nice muzzle flashes and I love the overall feeling of flying around is BoS but firing the guns is a disappointment.
Finkeren Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 The color of the tracers is a seperate issue. There is in fact some color variation missing. About the rest, there's one simple answer: Your eyes are not a video camera. Try actually going out there and look at tracers being fired, and you'll realise, that BoS comes pretty damn close.
K_Freddie Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 (edited) Actually in reality, the tracers were never streaks of light as they are in PC simulations.. but points of light, 'followed' by a smoke stream left by the burning tracer. The streaks of 'laser' light are only the results of camera exposure time, whether it be a 'stills' photo or a film shot. Maybe sometime in the next gazillion years, a developer might get it right !! = having a choice of RL play or film replay effects Getting back to the OP.. I suppose the 'laser' length should get smaller at higher FPS Edited November 7, 2014 by K_Freddie
K_Freddie Posted November 7, 2014 Posted November 7, 2014 An old video.. but 34-37 seconds is a good indicator of real tracers https://www.dropbox.com/s/odfb1q3qbs47s21/FW190Dancer.avi?dl=0 You don't see tracers heading towards you, except for the smoke trail. Tracers going away from you are a point of light, plus the smoke. 'Gunnery School' at 10,000 feet shows the difference between reality and 'make believe'
