Need help with Stuka controls assignments - Saitek Throttle Quadrant

I've started trying to fly the BoS Stuka, using Requiem's great videos as a guide.  But I cannot seem to figure out how to get my radiators to work.  (This is probably not the only problem I have with the Stuka, as something weird also seems to be going on with prop pitch during engine start, but one thing at a time).

There seem to be a lot of different radiator settings (oil, water, etc.), and I must say I don't understand them all, but here's how I have tried to assign my controls (the 1st column entries are defaults - I've added the button entries in the second column):

I'm trying to use the right-most button (rocker with b4 and b5) for the water radiator, and the middle button (rocker with b2 and b3) for the oil radiators, but while I can hear a subtle noise when I press the buttons nothing I do on my controller (with either button) makes the indicator move the way Requiem's video shows it moving (in the upper right corner of the screenshot below):

I have all the realism settings unticked (except only external views, warmed up engine and autopilot), so hopefully all the auto stuff isn't getting in the way.  I've also tried all the key commands I could find that seem to toggle various auto-modes on and off (like RightShift+R), but I still never see any movement in the water radiator indicator gauge no matter what I do.

Any idea what might be going wrong for me here and how to fix it?

Hmm - won't let me edit my OP for some reason.  Anyway, I have confirmed that both the buttons (either set) and the right-most slider handle will work the oil radiators (gauging by the movement of the oil radiator handle in the cockpit, matching Requiem's video), but I still have been unable to get either set of buttons or sliders to make the water radiator indicator move (though I still hear the same sort of noise as if something is happening when I use the controls) no matter what I do or how I change the assignments in the settings screen.

Has something changed about the way the water radiators work on the Stukas since Requiem did his video, or is it just bugged?

OK - there seems to be a number of odd things happening - did they change the start-up routine for the Stuka in some patch/update somewhere along the way?  When I try to follow Requiem's video advice to start the Stuka, things start to get weird as soon as I hit the "E" key.  Although I've set the prop pitch/rpm lever to full back (coarse) as in the video, it magically moves forward without input from me.  Also, the water radiator indicator moves to closed (as the video says it should be), again without input from me (I could not make it close manually despite all my efforts, but it does it by itself after I start with "E").

And worst of all, I'll start rolling straight for a few feet and then unlock my tail wheel (as the video says to do), and immediately my plane starts circling around with no chance of controlling it - when I look outside, my tailwheel looks like it's been broken in a full-turned position, and will not straighten out no matter what combination of rudder and throttle I try:

What the heck is going on with this?

Not sure about second question, but here are my bindings - were working with Stuka few days ago. Before I assigned them to axes, radiators worked fine in Stuka with Z/K and N/X keys. Notice that I don't bind the top controls (close shutters / open shutters) and don't seem to need them.

Perhaps your bindings are conflicting, with for instance joy button 5 assigned to "open shutters" option and to close shutters via "shutters control" option, so you're both opening ans shuting them?

1. Turn on normal mode and technochat, disable automatic radiators with Shift+R. Technochat it will tell you exactly what you're doing with your radiators. Whatever you think of technochat in combat missions, it's good way to see what effect your control bindings have.

2. Try reversing the "axes" of lower two (radiator shutters control) bindings. If they are in bound opposite to upper four (open / close) , this should make them match each other.

3. Consider binding water radiator to the same axis as engine cowls shutters - the planes have either one or other but never both and they have similar in-game effect, so it's safe to bind them to same axis. Not unlike mixture and altitude throttle in RoF.

4. Try unbinding the top four controls, things seem to work for me without them.

I hope any of these works for you .

Thanks man - I now know that the buttons are working for the water radiator (according to the tech notes in Normal mode) - it's just the cockpit gauge that's bugged and not working.  Hopefully they'll get that fixed at some point (the gauge works/moves in autopilot/autostart mode, just not when you're opening/closing the water radiator manually).

OK, hopefully the game will remember that I have turned off all the auto things, since there doesn't seem to be a way to know if those are on unless you use the tech chat display.  It seemed to do so when I just closed out and went back in - so far so good.

So assuming that the tech chat is correct and the water radiators are actually working, I next have to figure out why the tail wheel is broken.  Just sitting on the parking area, without starting engine - the first shot shows the tail wheel while still locked:

and the next one shows what happens as soon as you unlock the tail wheel (which explains why I've been driving in circles and not able to taxi):

Guess I'll try to find a bug thread and post something there if it hasn't been noted before.

Apparently the water radiator indicator gauge only fails to work before you start the engine.  After I start it the gauge needle moves correctly as I move the control lever, but with the engine off it doesn't move.  I wonder if that's representing some phase of the engine start process before power is turned on for the cockpit gauges?  It didn't seem that way in Requiem's video - I wonder if they changed the startup procedure somewhere along the way?

Now, if I could just get some power to my Esc key and exit this mission - I flew all the way to the target area and back on expert, destroyed something (not sure exactly what/how many) and managed to make it back and land without blowing my engine (thanks to that great Abbreviated Flight Manual for the Ju-87 I found in another thread around here), and now I'm sitting just off the runway and unable to end the mission.

This game hates me   :(
