Reno Air Races

The Reno Air Races start next week.

 

I am disappointed that What Da Focke-Wulf won't be there, but the Unlimited class still has a nice field with Rare Bear with new wings, 5 Sea Furies, a Tiger Cat, 6 P-51Ds and Precious Metal a P-51 "XR" (really a D model but powered by a Griffon, something like 3,200 HP and contra-rotating props - even by race plane standards it looks a bit odd), a Corsair and a Yak-11.  Strega and Miss America will both be racing.  Strega has gone 491mph at race altitude (under 250 ft AGL) which is pretty quick for a Mustang.  I don't believe Parrothead is racing.

Even in the stock class probably nothing can keep up with the Mustangs because of their wing design.

I am glad that Precious Metal is in the race! There may be faster planes, but Precious Metal is my favorite. She reminds me of the Teacher's Skyly J2, from the movie Sky Crawlers.
