Hi all, I'm wondering if the LA-5 gunsight is in the correct position or maybe I'm wrong and I missed something...

disable trackIR with F9 if using trackIR

use the insert - home - delete - end - page up - page down keys, and press F10 to save it; becomes your default view

F9 again to re-enable trackIR

Hi all, I'm wondering if the LA-5 gunsight is in the correct position

this is historically correct position of gunsight, real pilots even were flying with opened canopy for better aiming. you can use this as it , or you can set what you want and pressing f10.

Seriously? You can't even see the middle line of the crosshair projection.  Seems like kind of a glaring error to overlook.

position of gunsight in cockpit is really correctly, exactly for s8 and around.

and personally i dont know, and dont sure in correctness of this realisation, BUT, i seen documental and other mentions, that air intake really "interferes when aiming".

if you not agree, well, you easily can send here your source...

It is OK in that position and it has been changed by devs due to claims that before it was too low. What Bivalov wrote is correct. And some soviet pilots didn´t aim at all thru PBP gunsights, they led their shooting with tracers.Shoot when you see rivets :salute:

With a 3D vision, this would be less obstructive. But with our cyclop view, you basically can't fly with your head in a realistic position. You either have to move your head to either side or use the way too high (for constant flying and closed canopy) head position.

That's why i actually preferred the previous incorrect position of the gunsight, but since this one is now historical accurate and all those people wanted to have it this high (and still fly Yak mostly :P), i won't complain.

Have to say I'm glad I didn't get the La-5 now.  Going off of the screen, it's not even that the air intake is obscuring the view from the gunsight, it's that the gunsight is obscuring the view of the target.  Kind of counter-intuitive for an aiming device, I'm sure you'll agree.

You can adjust the default view to whatever you want.  Center the gunsight is what I did.

Am I missing something?

Umm...you can adjust the gunsight so it's in the center of the sight glass. This is all much ado about nothing.

The sim pilot has one eye in the middle of his virtuell head. Real pilots had two eyes left and right of center. This is why the gunsight of russian planes seems to be centered in sim, and in german planes we have to move to the right to center the german gunsight. In RL it was opposite, but there is no way to model a two eyed virtuell pilot.

Maybe in 10 years or so virtual reality entertainment will reach such level of real perception.I´m looking forward for my retirement

With actual demographics trend I will most probably never reach retirement age (could be 100 years old age threshold)

Thanks a lot for all your feedback. I was just wondering if it was correct.
