What planes actually use the boost 'action'?

I ask because I think in the 190 the 'boost' is just a pushing of the throttle all the way forward.  Something you don't want to do long because it will somehow damage the engine.

 

But in other planes, is there really something this ACTION in the key bindings actually do?  And just what planes might those be?

The La-5 has the "boost" function. That's about it.
