Ridiculously Detailed

So, I hear gunfire as we're landing at Shkolniy(sp?) on LD Heavy Metal... and I think nothing of it, as the Germans were absolutely thick...

But then the plane starts acting really weird, and I say "Are we getting hit?!" and my wife (who is crocked on scotch) is just CACKLING over Mumble...

She sawed off our tail "just to see if she could do it"....

Hats off, devs... this is some downright amazing realism... and also a word of caution to gunners out there to be careful hahaha!

I wish I could get my wife to fly with me :)

I did that last week flying with Newfie. I didn't say anything about it either. I didn't quite saw off the tail, but it reminded me of that scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. "Son, I'm sorry. They got us."

Actually it's more like "Shun, I'm Shorrrry. They got usshh."

Something I noticed-

I earlier versions of Early Access, when flying the Focke-Wulf, it seemed as though damage (to the wings at least) was modelled by simplistic black decals lacking any detail whatsover. Recently, however, I was flying an Me-109F and got clipped from behind by a LaGG while I was attacking an airfield. I was pleasantly surprised to see a wealth of detail through my damage skin, spars, ribs, rivets, and what not. It was at least comparable to the very fine physical damage model of an earlier 1C sim whose title we don't mention here.

Not sure if all planes are now treated this way, but I am sure that at least on earlier versions, the DM wasn't so well defined.

I like!

Maybe she'd like to fly with me?

:P

What ever floats her boat. As long as she gets a copy of BoS.

Oh man...I read that out like you wrote it and I sounded just like him....

Never sat in a gunner's position in the old IL-2.

Is this something new? I shot up a Pe-2 pretty bad today. We were at high altitude and our speed was pretty high. I saw his starboard main gear start to come down then rip off in the airstream. To be sure I got up right underneath him and looked up and sure enough his landing gear doors were open on that side but the gear was gone. Pretty cool. I thought I recalled guys complaining that this kind of effect was missing from the DM. So I thought I would ask if it's new or something that's been there awhile and I haven't noticed.

Not discrediting you, but if it's there I have never seen it.

I knew I should have took a screenshot or video. It's the first time I've seen it and I couldn't believe it. It happened quickly, I stopped firing and the starboard gear started dropping, as soon as the gear came down it ripped off into the airstream. You would have to be looking at the right moment to see it. It would be easy to miss. I was using 15mm gun pods I did some massive damage to that plane. Like I said, I confirmed it for myself, because I could not believe what I just witnessed, by looking right into the bay for that gear and it was indeed empty. It was the bay right under the starboard motor and the port gear was still closed. We were at a very high altitude like 4500 meters, and the port gear did not come down, so this had to be the result of damage.

Best occasion I remember from flying the Gotha in RoF:

Taking off with back gunner on board, everything normal.

Suddenly a front gunner joins my bomber, they both start to look at each other.

While flying I hear bullets passing my head.

As I look around both gunners are killed with their MGs facing each other....

So, never let your gunner stations stay open if not for a mate ;)

Well I wish somebody else would chime in that has any official knowledge of the DM. I don't think this guy believes me and I know what I saw today. Guess I'll have to fly against Pe-2s like mad tommorrow and hope I replicate it. This time I'll remember to get a video of it.

I've seen collisions and wheels etc go flying through the air before. Of course, one of those things you rarely catch as it happens too fast, just like my dive bomb onto a bridge with the Pe-2, went too well :).

I thought that somebody will think I just shot it off, but I had stopped firing and started to close the distance. Then I noticed the gear doors opening and the starboard gear coming down slowly. As it got almost fully extended it ripped off and flew below me. This whole time I was not firing. I was too stunned and trying to believe my eyes. Now I really wish I can get someone with some official DM knowledge here. Edited by GeneralZod

Thanks, good to know I'm not crazy.  :)  I just remember guys complaining stuff like this wasn't in the damage model, and then it was there. Very cool. Glad to see things get even better.

I believe you, I just haven't seen it myself. It's a very well documented "form of damage" and should be there if it isn't already.

Not about to start applauding the DM over it, though. Tangible DM needs an incredible amount of work.

I was saying that voidhunger didn't seem to believe me. As far as the DM this shows they are still working and improving things then.

I've seen it too. My lagg got shot up by a 109 and the right gear dropped and came off in the slipstream...very cool. Then I I got shot down so ..ehhh..still cool though.

On the subject of details, has anyone noticed friendly (or Russian, I wouldn't know) ground units sometimes firing green flares? Why do they that?

S!

Guess they want to signal that they are friendlies to prevent you starving them or call for air support against the enemy ground forces they are fighting. In one missions where I was heading home to the airfield during night, I got two green flares as I got closer to the runway, which helped me spotting it.

Eh.

Time will tell - I haven't seen any improvement (aside from physics-based interaction) in regards to the tangible DM for a long time.
